Disturbing that PM's I-Day speech didn't have Nehru's mention: Pawar

1 2 Pune: NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday was critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech and said not mentioning the name of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was "disturbing". "I heard the Prime Minister's speech from the Red Fort. It was very disturbing that he did not mention Nehru in his entire speech," Pawar said in a private function in Pune, reacting to Modi's speech. "Nehru gave important years of his youth to the freedom struggle of India. After independence, he led the country and spread the message of peace worldwide. Even after his immense contribution, his name was not taken by the Prime Minister, which was unfortunate," the veteran politician said. It is essential for the country to continue its journey on the path of Gandhi and Nehru. " Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Their leadership in the pursuit of peace is highly commendable,' said external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in a brief statement. 'India appreciates the progress made in the summit. The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine,' he said.
