#SHOWBIZ: Misha Omar scores a first with 'Break'

New Straits Times19 hours ago
MISHA Omar at 43 proves she's still at the top of her game with her new single 'Break'.
Recently released under Sony Music Entertainment, the song marks Misha's first-ever cross-border collaboration with Indonesian music legend Melly Goeslaw.
Written entirely by Melly and produced by Tohpati, 'Break' is a soul-stirring anthem wrapped in raw emotions.
It also serves as the official soundtrack for the drama series 'Mandul Bukan Pilihan'.
A MESSAGE, A MILESTONE
The song began with a message, literally. Misha sent Melly a DM on Instagram.
"I gathered my courage and messaged her," says Misha. "I told her I wanted a song written by her. To my surprise and joy, she agreed and composed 'Break' just for me."
For Melly, the feeling was mutual. "I've been a fan for such a long time. She simply has an amazing voice. I've always been in awe of Misha."
Though the song was recorded in Jakarta, the two had never actually met prior to the private media listening party hosted by Misha recently at Courtyard by Marriott KL South.
BACK TO SCHOOL (SORT OF)
The intimate event felt more like a reunion with old friends than a press launch.
Misha, elegant yet irreverently witty, cracked jokes and charmed the room like she was hosting a long-overdue catch-up.
"I've been doing this for two decades," she said with a grin. "I wouldn't have made it this far without media friends. Thank you for still writing about me, still listening."
Then came the surprise: Melly appeared.
The crowd erupted as the two divas embraced for the first time in person.
They later took the stage together, with Misha performing 'Break' live.
"When I was writing this song, it sounded ordinary," Melly said.
"But when I heard Misha's vocals, it became extraordinary. She gave it soul."
PREPARATION WITH PURPOSE
Despite her decades of experience and three 'Anugerah Juara Lagu' Best Vocal wins, Misha still treats every project like the first.
Before recording 'Break', she returned to vocal classes with her long-time coach, Datuk Syafinaz Selamat, who was at the event as well.
"Every time I start something new, I go back to class," she says.
"We dissect the lyrics, line by line, to really feel the emotions behind the words."
While the title may hint at pause or heartbreak, for Misha, 'Break' means reclaiming space.
"It's not about stopping," she says. "It's about giving myself permission to create something meaningful again."
And 'Break' delivers just that: an elegant heartbreak ballad that feels timeless, universal and entirely her own.
It's also a celebration of regional creativity, bridging the musical worlds of Malaysia and Indonesia.
"This isn't about replacing local composers," she clarifies.
"It's about exploring, pushing boundaries and celebrating the richness of Nusantara music."
WHAT'S NEXT?
With 'Break' already streaming on all major platforms, Misha is warming up for her next big move.
Her solo concert, 'DiA MISHA OMAR' on Nov 29 at Mega Star Arena, promises to be another milestone in her illustrious career. Tickets, priced from RM288 to RM1,200, have been on sale since July 25.
Between now and then? Maybe another collaboration. Maybe more ballads.
But one thing's for sure, Misha's not slowing down.
"As long as I have something honest to say, I'll keep singing," she says.
"Each new song should feel like the start of something."
So, if 'Break' feels like a beginning, it's because it is. Misha hopes this collaboration builds bridges through melody and acknowledging the interconnected nature of Southeast Asian creativity.
'Break' is available across all major streaming platforms, Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music.

#SHOWBIZ: Fans shout for Hael to propose to Dayang during concert

KUALA LUMPUR: "Propose to her!" and "marry!" were the chants from fans at the Hael Husaini & Repertoire Concert last night, as Dayang Nurfaizah joined the singer and composer on stage for a duet. The crowd at Zepp Kuala Lumpur erupted in cheers for Dayang. Excitement had been building for months amid rumours of a special relationship between the 'Di Pintu Syurga' singer and Hael Husaini. Adding to the 'drama', Dayang appeared on stage as Hael sang his solo track, 'Hari Ini', a song about a bride and groom celebrating their happy day. This seemed to fuel speculation about their relationship. The audience was captivated by their harmonious duet, cheering loudly when Hael and Dayang shared a moment, especially during the line, "Today I am a man beside a woman, I will call her wife." Dayang and Hael then performed 'Haram', the winning song at the 33rd Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL), before Dayang sang Hael's latest single, 'Lemah'. Dayang also took a moment to share her experience of working with Hael. "It's fun working with Hael. I really appreciate this opportunity. When he's working, he's very serious, easy to talk to, and incredibly talented," she said. "Hael works really hard. Even when he's joking, he jokes really hard," Dayang quipped, which was met with more cheers from the fans. The concert also featured a surprise appearance by Malaysian legend Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza, who performed 'Anta Permana', a song composed by Hael and Ezra Kong. Other artistes who joined Hael on stage included Nadeera, Wany Hasrita, and Nabila Razali. At the post-concert press conference, Hael dismissed the fan chants as playful teasing aimed at both him and Dayang. "Actually, they were shouting for the people up there because there were a lot of couples present tonight," he said. "For me, it's fine to be teased like that. My songs cover all kinds of themes. Some are about happiness. So, when people offer prayers for others, that's one of my biggest achievements tonight," he said. Hael's debut concert drew support from many fellow artistes, with popular couple Fattah Amin and Amira Othman among the most notable attendees. Other celebrities spotted in the crowd included Wani Kayrie, Dottie, Bella Dowana, and Watie of Elite. The show, which lasted over two hours, saw Hael perform 27 songs, including the duets. His setlist included hits like 'Jampi', 'Diam', 'Penjuara', 'Hajat', 'Hati', 'Sama Seperti Dulu', and 'Kejora'.

Johor Regent and Ahmad Zahid attend Singapore National Day Parade 2025

SINGAPORE: The Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, and his consort Che' Puan Mahkota Khaleeda Johor attended Singapore's National Day Parade at Padang on Saturday. The event celebrated Singapore's 60th year of independence with a grand display of national pride. Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi represented the Malaysian government at the invitation of Singapore. Also present were the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. This marked the first time foreign dignitaries were invited to the parade since 2019. Themed 'Majulah Singapura,' the parade began with a pre-show featuring the SAF parachute team, the Red Lions. Naval divers from the Republic of Singapore Navy performed the 'Jump of Unity' at Marina Bay. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong arrived at 6.30 pm to officially start the main event. A record 40 marching contingents participated, the largest since 1990. The military tattoo showcased performances by the SAF Band, Singapore Police Force Band, and student performers. The Republic of Singapore Air Force delivered a special aerial tribute, thrilling the 27,000-strong crowd. The Mobile Column returned with a combined aerial-flypast, maritime display, and drive-past involving multiple agencies. A total of 170 assets were featured, including new military equipment making their debut. The show segment included 39 local artistes and over 3,000 performers, including Malaysian rock legend Datuk Ramli Sarip. A 360-degree centre stage, the largest in NDP history, was a highlight of the celebrations. The evening ended with fireworks and a nationwide 'Majulah Moment,' uniting Singaporeans in reciting the National Pledge. National Day festivities will continue on Sunday at five heartland locations across Singapore. - Bernama

Singapore turns 60: Padang and Marina Bay dazzle in milestone celebration

SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): In a grand celebration of Singapore's diamond jubilee, tens of thousands descended on the heart of the city-state on Aug 9 to usher in the Republic's 60th year of independence. To allow more to soak in the pomp and pageantry of the birthday bash, parade organisers extended the celebrations beyond the Padang to Marina Bay, where about 200,000 gathered. At the bay, so popular were some spots that Merlion Park and the area in front of One Fullerton were closed by 4.38pm – an hour before the National Day Parade (NDP) kicked off at 5.40pm. The earlier sweltering heat had given way to a passing drizzle shortly before the parade got under way. Kicking off the milestone parade, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong made a surprise appearance with his electric guitar in the pre-parade video Makin' Our Way. Another crowd pleaser came at 5.50pm, when seven naval divers leapt from a H225M medium-lift helicopter, descending about 1,830m into the bay – flippers first. They were followed about five minutes later by seven Red Lions parachutists, whose much-awaited arrival at the Padang delighted the crowd. Having the naval divers plop into the waters of Marina Bay enabled more people to get up close to the action outside the Padang, where the main parade took place. Among the 27,000 spectators at the Padang were foreign guests such as Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who were seated close to Singapore's Cabinet ministers in the VIP stand to witness the milestone parade. Besides the customary 21-gun salute for President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, spectators by the bay were also treated to a maritime vessel display, four water floats, a live performance by singer Benjamin Kheng on a floating stage, as well as vibrant light projections on Fullerton Hotel and UOB Plaza One. For the first time in parade history, the parade and ceremony segment featured a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) guard-of-honour contingent following public feedback. Six guard-of-honour contingents will be permanent fixtures in the years to come – four from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), one from the Singapore Police Force, and one SCDF contingent. To commemorate its 10th anniversary, the SAF Volunteer Corps also fielded a full contingent at the parade for the first time. Eyes were turned skywards and necks craned as the Republic of Singapore Air Force put on eight aerial displays over the course of the night. It began with the traditional State Flag flypast, and pilots later pulled off a gravity-defying 'bomb burst' manoeuvre, where the jets soared upwards before speeding off in various directions in an enhanced salute to the nation. Integrating aerial flypasts into the mobile column had never been done until NDP 2025, where 22 aircraft flew over the Padang in four formations in a display of the RSAF's aerial prowess. While the mobile column demonstrated the Republic's military might, some of the parade's most poignant moments came in its final segment, when Lieutenant-Colonel (NS) Alex Chan emerged in a Leopard 2SG main battle tank with his 10-year-old son Keith. The crowd later broke into cheers when some SAF and Home Team veterans were introduced – in a nod to the shared commitment to defence across generations. Among them were 95-year-old retired Second Warrant Officer Booi Seow Kiat, who sailed RSS Panglima, the Republic of Singapore Navy's first ship, and retired Senior Warrant Officer 1 Jimmy Tan, 66, who responded to the Hotel New World collapse in 1986 that killed 33. It was on this note that the show segment kicked off, with singer-songwriter Charlie Lim and Mandopop star Kit Chan taking the stage to perform the parade's theme song Here We Are. As with most NDP shows, the artiste line-up was a mix of experienced hands and young talent. Making their first appearance since NDP 2009 was local indie band Electrico, which performed that year's NDP theme song What Do You See. Hoisted up in a basket attached to a floating balloon, he sang We Will Get There – the first National Day song he wrote, which was performed at the 2002 parade. Representing a younger generation of artistes was singer-songwriter Linying, who performed original composition I Will Walk With You, while songstress Heema Izzati sang Lim's Room At The Table. Some of the night's loudest cheers were reserved for Aldrich Jai Kishen, 31, one of five Singaporeans whose stories were told in a film screened in segments between the show's four acts. The film told of how Jai – a youth worker at Boys' Town, where he was a resident – discovered a passion for drumming while in his teens that helped him to overcome a rough childhood. Jai took to the stage for the show's final act as the film concluded, performing an upbeat remix of Linying's NDP 2021 theme song, The Road Ahead, alongside Electrico vocalist Dave Tan. Rounding off the show was Chan, who returned to the NDP stage for the first time since 2015 to belt out Home, the classic that she first performed at NDP 1998. In a dazzling finale to NDP 2025, its theme – Majulah Singapura – were the last words sang as a kaleidoscope of fireworks illuminated the night sky at the close of the National Anthem. Before long, rain fell over on the Padang again, as President Tharman greeted performers before leaving the parade grounds. Referring to the return of the drizzle as 'showers of blessing', show host Joakim Gomez said: 'As we close this chapter to SG60, let's move on into the next 60 years together. Relax – we will get there.' -- The Straits Times/ANN
