Man drowns after being swept away in Dabong river
KOTA BHARU : A 47-year-old man who went missing while bathing in Sungai Kenerong, Dabong, here today was found dead at about 4.13pm. He is believed to have drowned.
Kuala Krai police chief Mazlan Mamat said the man was swept away by currents when he went to check on the depth of the river.
'The victim had gone with nine friends to bathe in the river at about 12.30pm. He went ahead to check on the water depth but was swept away by currents and went missing,' he said in a statement today.
A fire and rescue department spokesman said a search operation was held at 2.15pm. The victim was found two hours later at a depth of 3.7m lodged between some rocks.

Penang police chief Azizee Ismail said this was to ensure public peace and the safety of the local community. 'We urge all parties to wait for the decision of the deputy public prosecutor's office (on the case) and not to commit any action that can raise tensions. 'Police will take stern action against any party that breaches the law or commits a breach in peace according to the relevant laws,' he said in a statement. Azizee said 38 police reports had been lodged across the country over the incident, and the investigation paper was submitted to prosecutors on Aug 11. DAP had sponsored a giant Jalur Gemilang for the hardware shop after the owner was accused of hoisting the national flag upside down. Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh had said that he and other leaders would turn up outside the hardware store tomorrow to see if DAP had hung its promised flag correctly. Bersatu Youth has also said it would join its Umno counterpart tomorrow. Akmal previously threatened to protest at the shop if the owner was not charged by Thursday, saying he would personally 'teach this 'Ah Pek' (uncle) how to put up a flag properly'. Civil society group Projek Sama subsequently urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to intervene and rein in Akmal, to stop the Umno man's 'witch-hunt', especially if the shop owner was not charged over the issue. Terengganu Umno Youth also apologised for an error in a graphic of the Jalur Gemilang posted on the wing's social media account, saying it was an unintentional mistake by the graphic designer. Akmal, however, urged the police to act, even though the person involved was from his own party.

PETALING JAYA : Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli said his son was dragged and stabbed with a syringe by an assailant at a Putrajaya shopping mall this afternoon. According to Rafizi, the attack occurred at about 1.45pm as his son and wife were getting into the car. He said that checks of CCTV footage showed that two men, dressed in black with helmets fully covering their faces, had followed his wife's car on a motorcycle before the incident. 'They had waited earlier and rushed to attack my son at the right moment,' he said in a statement. 'My son was immediately taken to Universiti Putra Malaysia Hospital for treatment.' Rafizi said he and his family have provided statements to the authorities, and he also expressed his gratitude to the police and hospital staff for their assistance. The Pandan MP described the attack as unprecedented in his political career, and said he believed it was a warning for him not to speak out on certain issues. 'God willing, while I will take follow-up measures to enhance security, I will not yield to any threats and will continue to perform my duties as usual,' he said. Malaysiakini earlier reported that Rafizi's son was attacked in a mall car park in Putrajaya, with Sepang police confirming the incident. In a statement later, youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh expressed her sympathies to Rafizi and his family, and called for the authorities to investigate the matter immediately and ensure public safety. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has condemned the 'vile and treacherous' attack on the son of former economy minister Rafizi Ramli at a shopping mall in Putrajaya today. In a Facebook post, Anwar said he had contacted home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to ensure that a transparent and speedy investigation is carried out into the incident. 'We have yet to recover from the issue of bullying in schools, and now, another deeply regrettable act has occurred … a vile and treacherous attack on the son of our brother Rafizi. 'I am praying for the wellbeing of Rafizi and his family,' he said.
