Cong slams BJP, says Modi govt left no stones unturned in ruining economy
The Congress on Tuesday attacked the Centre over interest rates on savings accounts reportedly reaching the lowest level in 25 years, alleging that the Modi government has in the last 11 years left no stone unturned in "ruining" the country's rapidly growing economy.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh shared a media report on X which claimed that the 1% cut in repo rate by the RBI has forced banks to reduce their deposit rates, pushing savings account interest rates to a 25-year low.
"In the last 11 years, the Modi government has left no stone unturned in ruining the country's rapidly growing economy. Starting with demonetization, new experiments are being conducted on the people of the country every year, they are being tortured in new ways everyday," Ramesh said in a post on X in Hindi.
The interest rates on savings accounts have reached the lowest level in 25 years, which is directly hitting the pockets of the elderly and the common citizens, he said.
"Banks have already closed their doors for the common people, after this they will be available only to the very rich capitalist friends," the Congress leader said.
"Prime Minister, the well-being of the people of the country is your first responsibility, but you are busy in increasing the wealth of your capitalist friends by diverting the money of the people of the country to their companies through the stock market," Ramesh alleged.
This is a huge injustice and deception towards the people of the country, he said.
The Congress has been attacking the government over its handling of the economy, claiming the issues of rising prices, decreasing private investment and stagnating wages were hitting the common people hard.

Himachal CM orders mandatory news reading in school morning assembly
Shimla, June 24 (UNI) Stung by a recent incident that exposed glaring gaps in students' general knowledge during a surprise school visit, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has prompted the state education department to implement a significant reform: compulsory daily news reading during morning assemblies in all government schools. The Directorate of Elementary Education issued a formal notification on June 23 mandating this initiative. The directive aims to boost students' awareness of current affairs, sharpen communication skills, and instill the habit of staying informed. The move comes in direct response to the Chief Minister's unannounced visit to Government Senior Secondary School at Baga Sarahan in Kullu, where Class X students were unable to answer basic questions such as the name of India's President and its capital city. The correct answers were, embarrassingly, provided by Class IV students instead. Following the incident, Sukhu expressed deep concern over the declining education standards and directed the education department to take corrective steps. "It is unacceptable that students in higher classes are unable to respond to basic civic knowledge questions," the Chief Minister had said at the time. He also highlighted in the Vidhan Sabha that the state's education ranking had slipped from 8th to 18th position nationally over the past five years. According to School Education Director Ashish Kohli, students will now read headlines from English and Hindi newspapers during the morning assembly, with participation rotating by roll number. Teachers will assist in selecting age-appropriate news focused on general knowledge, science, environment, and important global or national developments—while avoiding sensational content. Libraries would be better utilised, and schools have been instructed to ensure regular newspaper availability. The reading session would be limited to 3–5 minutes to maintain the flow of the assembly. The education department hopes that this reform will not only help students become more informed citizens but also encourage public speaking, improve vocabulary, and enhance critical thinking—marking a shift from rote learning to holistic development in Himachal's government schools. Enemy surrendered in 22 minutes: PM on Op Sindoor
India's military forced the enemy to surrender in 22 minutes using weapons made in India during Operation Sindoor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday, further emphasising that last month's military operation against Pakistan projected India's stringent policy against terrorism to the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attends the centenary celebration meeting of the historic conversation between Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi. (PTI) Speaking at an event marking the centenary celebration of the historic meeting between social reformer Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi, the Prime Minister said the recent military operation showcased the strength of Indian-made weapons and the decisiveness of the country's armed forces. 'The world has recently witnessed India's capacity. Operation Sindoor has clarified India's stringent policy against terrorism. We showcased that there is no place safe for those who shed the blood of Indians,' PM Modi said at the event held at Vigyan Bhawan in the Capital, adding that India now takes every step guided solely by its national interest. 'Its impact was visible during Operation Sindoor. Our soldiers forced the enemy to surrender within 22 minutes using weapons made in India,' he said. He expressed hope that Indian-made weapons would become globally influential in the years to come. India launched Operation Sindoor in the early hours of May 7 when the military hit nine terror camps inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), killing more than 100 terrorists; it was New Delhi's direct military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror strike that killed 26 people. The operation triggered four days of strikes and counterstrikes with drones, missiles and long-range weapons before the two sides reached an understanding on stopping all military action on May 10. He pointed to the guiding principles behind India's international initiatives, including 'One Earth, One Health', 'One Sun, One Earth, One Grid' and 'One Earth, One Family, One Future'. 'Sree Narayana Guru envisioned a society that is away from discrimination. I am satisfied to mention that the country is ending every scope of discrimination following the saturation approach,' Modi said on Tuesday, as he reiterated his government's commitment to uplifting the marginalised. Modi added that he often reflects on the teachings of Sree Narayana Guru when making key decisions for the benefit of society's most deprived segments. 'If you recall the situation, 10-11 years from now, people were forced to live in poor conditions decades after Independence…Crores of people lost hope of living a better life. How would the country have developed under such conditions? Therefore, we inculcated sensitivity in the thoughts of the government and took the resolution of service,' he said. Drawing connections between Sree Narayana Guru's advocacy for women's rights and his government's initiatives on women-led development, Modi cited recent reforms that enabled women's access to previously restricted spaces. 'From sports to space, daughters are making the country proud. Every section of society is contributing to Viksit Bharat (Developed India),' he added. The centenary event commemorated the meeting between Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi, which took place at Sivagiri Mutt in Kerala on March 12, 1925. The historic conversation between the two eminent personalities touched on pivotal social and political issues such as the Vaikom Satyagraha, religious conversions, non-violence, the abolition of untouchability and the upliftment of the downtrodden, a government statement said. 'A historic incident which not only showed a new direction to our freedom movement, but also gave a solid meaning to the goal of Independence and the dream of an independent India. 100 years ago, the meeting between Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi is inspiring and relevant even today,' Modi said.

On Tuesday, Dalit Mahasabha in the district staged a demonstration near the revenue divisional commissioner's office, demanding strong action against the accused. The Mahasabha submitted a memorandum to chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi through the commission's office. "The govt should issue guidelines about the transportation of cattle. Responding to the allegations, senior BJP leader Ram Chandra Panda said the govt has been very alert to such incidents. "Police took prompt action against the perpetrators by rounding up the main culprits," Panda said, advising opposition parties not to politicise the issue and let police investigate the matter.
