Cong slams BJP, says Modi govt left no stones unturned in ruining economy
The Congress on Tuesday attacked the Centre over interest rates on savings accounts reportedly reaching the lowest level in 25 years, alleging that the Modi government has in the last 11 years left no stone unturned in "ruining" the country's rapidly growing economy.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh shared a media report on X which claimed that the 1% cut in repo rate by the RBI has forced banks to reduce their deposit rates, pushing savings account interest rates to a 25-year low.
"In the last 11 years, the Modi government has left no stone unturned in ruining the country's rapidly growing economy. Starting with demonetization, new experiments are being conducted on the people of the country every year, they are being tortured in new ways everyday," Ramesh said in a post on X in Hindi.
The interest rates on savings accounts have reached the lowest level in 25 years, which is directly hitting the pockets of the elderly and the common citizens, he said.
"Banks have already closed their doors for the common people, after this they will be available only to the very rich capitalist friends," the Congress leader said.
"Prime Minister, the well-being of the people of the country is your first responsibility, but you are busy in increasing the wealth of your capitalist friends by diverting the money of the people of the country to their companies through the stock market," Ramesh alleged.
This is a huge injustice and deception towards the people of the country, he said.
The Congress has been attacking the government over its handling of the economy, claiming the issues of rising prices, decreasing private investment and stagnating wages were hitting the common people hard.

Shimla, June 24 (UNI) Stung by a recent incident that exposed glaring gaps in students' general knowledge during a surprise school visit, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has prompted the state education department to implement a significant reform: compulsory daily news reading during morning assemblies in all government schools. The Directorate of Elementary Education issued a formal notification on June 23 mandating this initiative. The directive aims to boost students' awareness of current affairs, sharpen communication skills, and instill the habit of staying informed. The move comes in direct response to the Chief Minister's unannounced visit to Government Senior Secondary School at Baga Sarahan in Kullu, where Class X students were unable to answer basic questions such as the name of India's President and its capital city. The correct answers were, embarrassingly, provided by Class IV students instead. Following the incident, Sukhu expressed deep concern over the declining education standards and directed the education department to take corrective steps. "It is unacceptable that students in higher classes are unable to respond to basic civic knowledge questions," the Chief Minister had said at the time. 8 held, minor detained for torturing 2 dalit men in Ganjam
1 2 Berhampur: Eight men were arrested on Tuesday and a minor detained for their alleged involvement in torturing two dalit men in Ganjam district on Sunday, suspecting them to be cattle smugglers. The men were assaulted, allegedly tonsured and made to crawl on their knees for a kilometre. The accused also forced them to eat grass and drink water from the drain, the two men claimed in their FIR at Dharakote police station. Those arrested were identified as Siba Shankar Mohapatra (25), Satya Sahu (20), Bainath Bisoyi (23), Om Gouda (23), Ganapati Polai (36), Santosh Dakua (30), Shankar Das (25) and Narayan Dakua (30). "Some others were also involved in the case and search is on to nab them," said Santosh Kumar Jena, SDPO, Aska. The incident resulted in widespread protests with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi seeking immediate action against the culprits. Describing the incident as inhuman, Rahul, the opposition leader in Lok Sabha, said it is a mirror for those who claim caste is no longer an issue. "Each incident that tarnishes the dignity of the Dalits is an attack on Baba Saheb's constitution and a conspiracy against equality, justice, and humanity," Rahul posted on X. Close to the village, he was stopped by a group of men, who accused Babula of being a cow smuggler. They demanded Rs 30,000 from him. When he refused to pay, the accused started assaulting him. Hearing his cries, Bulu Nayak (38), a relative of Babula, rushed to help. He, too, was assaulted before the men subjected the two to the torture. Police registered a case after Babula lodged an FIR. The accused were arrested under different sections of BNS and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocity) Act 1989, police said. According to Ganjam SP Suvendu Kumar Patra, "The main aim of the accused were to extort money in the name of cow smuggling." Amid the outrage, state Congress formed a five-member fact-finding committee under the chairmanship of legislative party leader Ram Chandra Kadam. The committee will visit the village, speak to the victims, and submit a report to the party. On Tuesday, Dalit Mahasabha in the district staged a demonstration near the revenue divisional commissioner's office, demanding strong action against the accused. The Mahasabha submitted a memorandum to chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi through the commission's office. "The govt should issue guidelines about the transportation of cattle. Farmers are afraid while transporting cattle for their own use due to the fear of miscreants," said Bhala Chandra Sarangi, a dalit leader who participated in the demonstration. BJD has also condemned the incident. "This incident has defamed Odisha and every Odia. The law and order machinery has collapsed. There is no semblance of administrative efficiency," BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty said, demanding strong action against the perpetrators. Responding to the allegations, senior BJP leader Ram Chandra Panda said the govt has been very alert to such incidents. "Police took prompt action against the perpetrators by rounding up the main culprits," Panda said, advising opposition parties not to politicise the issue and let police investigate the matter.
