Can't Ignore Hindi, But Don't Make It Compulsory From Class 1: Sharad Pawar
NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday said that Hindi should not be made mandatory from Class 1 in Maharashtra, underscoring that if a new language is to be introduced, it should be done only after Class 5.
"Hindi should not be made compulsory in primary education. There is no objection to Hindi being introduced after Class 5. A large section of the country speaks Hindi, and there is no reason to ignore the language completely," he said.
However, burdening young students with additional languages at the primary level is not appropriate, said Mr Pawar.
The octogenarian politician's remarks come amid a language row that erupted in Maharashtra after the state government last week issued an amended order, stating Hindi will generally be taught as the third language to students in Marathi and English medium schools from Classes 1 to 5.
Mr Pawar emphasised the importance of the mother tongue in early education and said parents should have the right to decide whether their children need to learn Hindi after Class 5.
It is also important to analyse how much language burden students can bear at the early stage, he said.
"If we put the burden of another language on students and the mother tongue gets sidelined in the process, then that is not appropriate. The state government should give up its insistence on making Hindi compulsory from Class 1," he said.
Mr Pawar said he supports the stand taken by Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray on the issue, adding that it is good if the Marathi-speaking population unites over the matter.
The Thackeray cousins have accused the BJP-led state government of trying to create a divide among the people on the basis of language.

Country will not forget dark days of Emergency: Saikia

Bommai criticises state govt's financial management and debt burden
Haveri: Former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai strongly criticised the state govt's financial management, asserting that it is financially insolvent without presenting a White Paper on the situation. He contended that the administration placed an additional debt of Rs 1 lakh on each state resident. Speaking to reporters in Haveri on Thursday, he referenced home minister G Parameshwara's acknowledgment of the govt's fund shortage. "If Parameshwara says something, it is as good as Lord Shiva himself saying it," he remarked. Responding to queries about the BJP's stance on the state's economic situation, the former CM stated that rather than a white paper, the Congress govt possesses a black paper. He highlighted that prices and taxes rose universally, with families bearing an annual burden of Rs 50,000, while each individual carries an extra Rs 1 lakh in debt. Regarding the housing controversy, the MP noted that MLA BR Patil, who initially voiced concerns, became quiet since becoming vice-chairman of the Planning Commission. He suggested Patil might be considered for a cabinet position in the next expansion. Addressing agricultural issues, Bommai mentioned his recent concerns about sub-standard soybean seeds in Ranebennur. He pointed out the current fertiliser shortage despite heavy rains and increasing demand for urea. He accused the agriculture department of wholesale profiteering and neglecting the Haveri district's needs.
