Netflix adds Inbetweeners writer's 'timeless' romance 'grounded in laughter' this week

Daily Mirror5 days ago
The Netflix film is a must-watch for fans of romantic comedies.
Netflix is set to drop a "timeless romance" that will be "grounded in laughter", and fans don't have long left to wait.

My Oxford Year is a brand new romance which is directed by BAFTA nominee Iain Morris, known for his work on the Inbetweeners. Based on the novel by Julia Whelan, fans can expect to laugh and cry as it follows Anna (Sofia Carson), an ambitious young American woman who sets out for the UK.

Fulfilling her childhood dream, Anna has her life on track, until she meets local Jamie (Corey Mylchreest) who completely changes both of their lives. A Netflix synopsis reads: "An ambitious American fulfilling her dream of studying at Oxford falls for a charming Brit hiding a secret that may upend her perfectly planned life."

Star Sofia Carson, who is also executive producer for the film, has teased fans with what they can expect. She added: "Iain Morris wrote and created one of the most iconic shows in British television, The Inbetweeners.
"Comedy is his language, so his vision of this film beautifully created a timeless, heartbreaking, sweeping romance, grounded in laughter. Within one scene you may fall madly in love, you may cry, but he will always make sure the joy of laughter is present."

According to Netflix's Tudum, Carson knew she'd found the Jamie to her Anna from the start, admitting she watched Queen Charlotte in awe.
The star said: "When it came time to cast Jamie, I always knew it would be Corey."

Bridgerton's Queen Charlotte star Corey also teased fans with plenty of tears and laughter as he said: "You can expect some laughs, a lot of love, maybe some sadness, a couple of surprises along the way, but [you can expect] to meet two really lovely, very human characters and all of their amazing friends and family. Get ready for a lovely journey."
As well as Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest (known for his role in Bridgerton's Queen Charlotte), fans will also see Dougray Scott (Hitman) as William Davenport and Catherine McCormack (Braveheart) as Antonia Davenport.
Harry Trevaldwyn (How To Train Your Dragon) will also play Charlie Butler and Esmé Kingdom (Fallen) as Maggie Timbs.
And fans cannot wait. Taking to social media, one person said: "Whoosh! Love it."
Another added: "Can't wait to see my queen again." A third echoed: "So excited, can't wait."
My Oxford Year is available to stream on Netflix on August 1.

'Deeply moving' TV show that will break your heart lands on Netflix

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video BBC drama Normal People has just arrived on Netflix, and people are warning new viewers to 'grab your tissues'. The widely acclaimed adaptation of Sally Rooney's bestselling novel of the same name made waves when it first came out in 2020 on BBC Three – leaving a trail of broken hearts in its wake. The Ireland-based story follows Connell and Marianne from their late teens through to their early 20s as they navigate love, loss and all the ways your first love can haunt you. Portrayed by Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones, the roles not only catapulted them into global fame but the show landed seven Bafta nominations, including a win for Paul as lead actor. The show has touched several lives for its portrait of the complex relationship our star-crossed lovers share – from their school days when Marianne felt socially rejected by Paul through their early adulthood as they both grow into themselves, and must navigate their own traumas. Set across 12 episodes, it has topped the list of people's favourite TV shows and amassed a loyal fanbase. 'Deeply moving. Lives long in the memory after watching,' Dermot M wrote on Rotten Tomatoes where it enjoys an outstanding 91% score. 'Powerful Perfection. Doesn't get any better than this. Literally my favorite series to ever been made. No flaws from me. Will re-watch again and again. Have the tissues ready every time,' Jackie H said. I have never experienced such a variety of feelings during a show. I was happy, sad, laughed, cried and at some point felt an immense anguish. That's how well these actors performed,' Jerry F declared. Over on Google Reviews, Noel Woodward described it as 'wondrous, magical, messy, complicated and oh so relatable'. 'A beautiful, patient, poetic series about messy love between two damaged, self-loathing people who find meaning and transcendence in a relationship despite their mistakes and inability to quiet the noise in their heads,' Michael Duran echoed. Adeline Jugler called it 'exquisite' while Andy David called it 'painfully beautiful in every possible way'. Last year, Twisters star Daisy told the BBC she 'loves those characters [and] would be wonderful to explore them again.' She added: 'Normal People was a series that was such a lockdown phenomenon. I think it introduced Paul and I to a lot of people and film-makers.' More Trending Since the show both have seen huge success in their careers with Paul landing an Oscar nomination for Aftersun and featuring in the blockbuster sequel Gladiator II. Meanwhile, Daisy has starred as the lead in another hit book adaptation, Where the Crawdads Sing, and is set to lead the remake of the classic novel Sense and Sensibility. So whether it is your 10,000th time rewatching or you have been putting it off for five years, this is your sign to grab a tub of ice cream and click play on Normal People episode one. ‘My husband and I went to play golf on the west coast': Catherine Zeta-Jones on filming Netflix hit ‘Wednesday' in Ireland

Ahead of Wednesday season two, Catherine Zeta-Jones discusses why the series and the Addams family are so relevant, visiting her Irish roots with husband Michael Douglas and feeling blessed in midlife Lately, we have become accustomed to very open public and private conversation about the realities of midlife, and yet it still seems strange to discuss Morticia Addams in this particular bracket. That said, in the new, second season of Netflix's Wednesday, Morticia, played again by Catherine Zeta-Jones, is very much a woman navigating the recognisable rigours of midlife.

I think this is the absolute beauty of what the Celebrity Dating agency does - yes it's a TV show, but it's also real. Anna added: "What myself, Paul, Dr Tara do, we are not scripted, our skill sets are something we very much practice on the outside as well as within the agency construct.' ‌ "And for Christine it was very brave that she wanted to dip her toe back into the world of dating and throughout the process of us getting to know her, she realised that perhaps this actually wasn't quite the right time for her to be doing that and took a great deal of confidence and bravery inside to recognise and actually now is not the right time." Revealing a glimpse of what to expect, Anna did admit that while Christine wasn't on the show for long, she did go on dates, and viewers will see a different side to the glamorous mum-of-three. ‌ Christine opened up after she left the show and wrote on Instagram at the time: "I joined Celebs Go Dating with great intentions but have realised that dating on a public platform and the attention that brings is just too soon for me. "They've said the door is always open for me which I'm so grateful but for now, I'm returning home to my family." A spokesperson for Celebs Go Dating also added in a statement that those behind the show have "loved" working with Christine and "respect her feelings". They said: "We have loved having Christine on the show and completely respect her feelings and decision to return home and have told her that the door is always open for her in the future at the agency."
