The victim, Chandan Mishra—a notorious gangster with numerous murder charges—was on medical parole and had been admitted to
Paras Hospital
in Patna. He was previously lodged in Bhagalpur jail, having been transferred there from Buxar. Mishra succumbed to his injuries shortly after the shooting.
Authorities suspect the attack was carried out by members of a rival gang, known as the Chandan Sheru gang. 'Chandan Mishra was a criminal with several murder cases. He was out on parole and was undergoing treatment when members of a rival gang shot him. We are working with the Buxar police to identify the assailants,' said Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikay Sharma.
Police are also probing the role of the hospital's security staff and whether there was any collusion that enabled the attackers to gain such easy access to the victim.
Live Events
The brazen hospital killing has intensified public and political outrage, especially amid a recent spike in violent crimes across Bihar's capital. Several high-profile murders, including those of businessman Gopal Khemka, BJP leader Surendra Kewat, and lawyer Jitendra Mahato, have raised concerns about the government's grip on law and order.
The ruling JDU-BJP coalition, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is facing mounting pressure from the Opposition, especially with state elections on the horizon. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav lashed out at the administration, questioning the safety of ordinary citizens. 'Criminals backed by the government stormed an ICU and killed a patient. Is anyone safe in Bihar anymore? Did such things happen before 2005?' he asked.
In response, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha condemned the incident and promised swift action. 'This is a serious and unfortunate event. A full investigation is underway, and those responsible will be brought to justice. The Chief Minister has made it clear that the culprits will be punished,' he said.
The daring attack has once again turned the spotlight on Bihar's security apparatus, sparking fears over public safety and the unchecked rise of gang-related violence in the state.

Police verification of staff, reporting out-of-station guests: Hotel security enhanced after arrest of Patna hospital murder accused from Kolkata

In a move to tighten security and enhance vigilance across Kolkata's burgeoning accommodation sector, the Bidhannagar police, under the leadership of DCP Airport, held a crucial meeting on Friday with representatives from hotels, guesthouses, and lodges operating under the Baguiati and airport police stations. The meeting, also attended by ACP Airport and Additional IC Airport police stations, comes in the wake of recent incidents highlighting loopholes in guest verification and security protocols, following the arrest of shooters implicated in the murder of Patna-based gangster Chandan Mishra. To ensure ongoing coordination and prompt communication, a dedicated WhatsApp group is being established, facilitating direct interaction between the police and accommodation providers, revealed officials. The Indian Express had reported how the Patna hospital murder case drew renewed attention to the Shukhobrishti housing complex in New Town, where the vehicle carrying the accused was parked for 40-45 minutes. Sukhobrishti, a massive residential project, has previously been linked to criminal activities, including a police shootout with wanted gangsters in 2021. The Patna shooters had contacted a common contact in Sukhobrishti, and their vehicle was traced, which was parked there for 40-45 minutes, the police had revealed. Authorities had also acknowledged the challenges posed by the sheer size of such complexes, a high proportion of tenants from outside the state, and the common practice of subletting, which complicates thorough background checks. Apart from this, five people were apprehended from the guest house in Madurdaha, Anandapur, which exposed lapses in document verification. A case has since been filed against the guest house under Section 223(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for disobeying government directives, despite the owner's claims of adhering to ID verification procedures. Addressing these concerns, the meeting focused on a comprehensive set of directives aimed at bolstering security measures. Key discussions revolved around: Mandatory SARAI licensing and guest verification: Emphasising strict adherence to SARAI licensing requirements and robust guest verification procedures, including mandatory ID checks, completion of detailed guest forms, and photographic records of all visitors. Maintenance of comprehensive registers: Hotels and accommodations were instructed to meticulously maintain visitor logs and staff registers, with a strong emphasis on police verification of all personnel. Reporting out-of-state guests and suspicious activities: A critical point of discussion was the immediate reporting of out-of-state guests and any suspicious activities to local police stations to pre-empt potential criminal hideouts and illegal operations. Awareness and prevention of criminal activities: Operators were urged to maintain heightened awareness regarding potential criminal hideouts, cyber frauds, and any channelisation of illegal activities. Strict restrictions on minors without guardians were also reiterated. Enhanced security infrastructure and safety measures: The meeting stressed the mandatory installation and 24/7 operation of CCTV cameras with a minimum 60-day footage retention period. Furthermore, robust fire safety measures, including regular drills and clear evacuation plans, along with the installation of panic buttons and adherence to first aid protocols, were made compulsory. UP Minister protests false FIR against BJP workers in Kanpur

Kanpur: Uttar Pradesh Minister Pratibha Shukla staged a dharna at a police station in Kanpur Dehat , demanding action against an SHO for allegedly filing a false case under the SC/ST Act against BJP workers. The protest, which lasted five hours, prompted the removal of the local police outpost in-charge and a departmental inquiry against the SHO, officials said. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav attacked the Yogi Adityanath government over police actions in the state. He also took potshots at Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak as he shared a video on X of the minister's purported video call with Shukla's husband, who expressed displeasure over the situation. Shukla, the Minister of State for Women's Welfare and Child Development, accused SHO Satish Singh of lodging a fabricated case under the SC/ST Act against BJP workers, calling it a 'deliberate attempt' to target them. 'This is not a previous Samajwadi regime. This is Yogi's government, and false and fabricated cases against BJP workers will not be tolerated,' Shukla told officials and media at the spot. Despite repeated efforts by Circle Officer (Sikandara) Priya Singh to persuade the minister to end the dharna, including a request to walk inside the SHO's chamber to speak to Superintendent of Police (Kanpur Dehat) Arvind Mishra, Shukla remained firm. 'Let the SP come out and speak in front of everyone,' she said, insisting that the matter be addressed publicly. 'I have never filed a police complaint in the last 25 years. But today, it's a matter of respect. I want to know under whose pressure this case was filed,' she asked the SP and DM. The protest was called off only after SP Arvind Mishra announced the removal of the local police outpost in-charge and ordered an inquiry against SHO Satish Singh, District Magistrate (Kanpur Dehat) Alok Singh told PTI. Additional SP Rajesh Pandey has been tasked with conducting a detailed inquiry and submitting a fact-finding report to the SP at the earliest. The ASP will examine the circumstances under which the cross FIR was lodged under the SC/ST Act and ensure that the investigation proceeds based strictly on facts, the DM added. During the protest, Shukla was joined by her husband and former MP Anil Shukla Warsi, who was purportedly seen talking to a senior Cabinet minister in the government, expressing displeasure over the situation. In a purported video which went viral, he was seen having an intense conversation with the senior Cabinet minister and he was heard saying: 'Were not you made the deputy CM to protect Brahmins? And now fake cases are being registered against them - they (BJP workers) are being abused and are just supposed to keep voting for you? This won't go on,' before the call ended abruptly. Yadav took a jibe on the BJP over the matter. In a post on X, he, without naming Pathak, said, 'DCM sir, first focus on your own people, then give advice to others. Earlier, there was only one DCM (Keshav Maurya) who was reprimanded, now both are reprimanded.' In another post, he took potshots at the Adityanath dispensation, saying, 'The ruling state minister herself is staging protest against her own police's actions, does the chief minister want anymore evidence?' According to officials, the controversy began after a road construction project was halted by local municipal councillor Shamshad Khan, prompting the minister's intervention. On Tuesday, an FIR was filed against Khan (corporator, Kanshiram Nagar) by contractor Zahoor Ahmad, alleging extortion, criminal intimidation, and intentional insult. On Thursday, Baburam Gautam filed a counter FIR against Abrar, Younus, Aslam, Yasir, and Shiva Pandey under various charges, including criminal intimidation, intentional insult, and relevant sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
