Kentucky Derby 2025 odds and picks: Betting lines, favorites, expert prediction, post positions

Yahoo05-05-2025
The 151st running of the Kentucky Derby is only hours away with a 6:57 p.m. ET post time at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. It is the beginning of the most important stretch of the horse racing season — the Triple Crown — and is the biggest single day in the sport. We will have live coverage of the Kentucky Derby all day.
Journalism is the 3-1 favorite on the morning line, but those odds will change in the lead-up to the race.
Yahoo Sports spoke with Lane Gold, host of Kentucky's Winners Circle, to preview the favorites and long shots in the race, as well as get a few best bets.
No. 8 Journalism (3-1): "He's won four races in a row, and his only defeat was his first race. Won the two big prep races in California, including winning the Santa Anita Derby on April 5. The No. 8 starting position isn't bad, not the best or worst. The Derby comes down to luck and a good rider. He's going to need a little bit of luck because he's going to break relatively quick, but he's going to be sitting behind the first flight. His jockey [Umberto Rispoli] is an underrated jockey, a rising star in California — this is probably his best shot to win the Derby. Trainer Mike McCarthy used to work for D. Wayne Lukas. This is a Bob Baffert kind of road here, winning the prep races in California. There is a lot to like about Journalism. It's likely that his odds go up because there are 20 horses, and Baffert is back in the Derby. I suspect Journalism will end up at 4-1 or 5-1. He's the favorite, but won't be a huge favorite."
No. 18 Sovereignty (5-1): "He's outside, which is a good thing, probably running the middle pack early on, maybe 7th to 10th. He's a horse that has a better record than Sandman (two wins and two second places in five starts). His worst effort was his debut, when he was fourth, so he's been pretty consistent. Gets a good rider in Junior Alvarado and trainer Bill Mott, who is one of the best trainers to technically never win it outright, but this is one of his best chances to do just that. It used to be you needed three races in your sophomore year to win, but now horses are treated more gingerly. Sovereignty also won a race at Churchill Downs last October. He's 5-1 in the morning line, I suspect that will go up. Sometimes the public will ignore these horses, so I think he'll be 7-1, 8-1 or more."
No. 17 Sandman (6-1): "Similar logic applies here, as sometimes being outside is a good thing because there are fewer horses who will be out early on. Sandman isn't a consistent horse in terms of winning (three of eight). Any of the numbers won't blow your doors off with him, but he is a horse who will come from behind. He's going to be sitting 12th, 13th, 14th, somewhere in there, and there should be a lot of speed up front that will help a horse like this. If he's able to weave his way through traffic, he will certainly be a menace in the final quarter mile. He does have a great ride in Jose Ortiz, and his trainer, Mark Casse, is a good trainer in the United States and one of the best in Canada. The owners paid $1.2 million for this horse at a public auction last March, so they saw something in him. He's going to have to have some things go his way."
No. 9 Burnham Square (12-1): "He's won three of six, including the Blue Grass Stakes, where he won at the very last moment despite a rough start, which tells me that he can deal with adversity — and the Derby is full of that. There is a home-track advantage since he trains at Churchill Downs, and there's a lot of speed in the Derby. He's probably going to 12th or so, early, but he's coming back to Kentucky where he's based. Not a big-name trainer."
No. 1 Citizen Bull (20-1): "Do I think he really can win? Maybe, but this is a horse who will run fast early. He has no choice, since he's on the rail. He'll go to the front and has run well, outside of his last race. He's won four of six, so his record on paper is pretty good and you're getting Baffert at 20-1. Stranger things have happened with Baffert. War Emblem got the lead in the Derby and never looked back. The price will be right. He's going to be out early, and you know Baffert wants to win this race really badly."
"If I'm betting the Derby now, I would put Journalism on top of a few horses in an exacta or trifecta. I think Citizen Bull is all or nothing, either he's at front or will get crushed. We've seen horses come from the back, like Publisher, who could finish in the top three. The reason I'm staying with the favorite on top is that the Baffert path, which he took, is very likable and he's one of the hottest horses in the race. I think if he gets a clean trip he could win, but I could see a 30-1 or 40-1 horse get second. Pick some of your bombers in second or third and get a nice payoff."

Are the Steelers wrong to bench Rodgers, Metcalf for preseason finale?

Yahoo Sports host Andrew Siciliano, senior NFL writer Frank Schwab and senior NFL reporter Charles Robinson discuss Pittsburgh's decision to not play their new quarterback-wide receiver duo in the team's final warmup contest against the Panthers. Hear the full conversation on 'Inside Coverage' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Mike Tomlin made the announcement today that when the Steelers go to Carolina, four of his biggest names will not play. Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf, TJ Watt, and Cam Hayward. Not exactly surprising, but it means, Charles, as you pointed out on our text thread, that Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf will throw in a competitive period against someone other than teammates for the very first time together, week one, when they face the Jets. So that will be their dress rehearsal for the big premiere. It'll all be the same game. Is that not ideal? Are you telling me? Are you suggesting, are you suggesting maybe you would want a little more practice time between your, your number one wide receiver and the, you know, the quarterback you waited the entire offseason to get him into the building and finally acclimate with players. Yeah, it's a little, a little problematic, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if there is a slow start for, uh, the offense with, with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, I think it's a little overrated. I mean, we act like because Aaron Rodgers, we act like because Aaron Rodgers didn't play the preseason that these guys haven't been doing anything. Like they're just gonna meet in New York, like, hey, I'm DK, I'm They practice every day. Like you're gonna be OK, you play, you play them, you're gonna be killing them. You, you think it's gonna take October. OK, so they play up one series, two series. Aaron Rodgers throws well to DK Metcalf three times, which would kind of be a lot for two series, and that, oh, they're humming, they're ready to go against the Jets, practicing the wholethat when, when the Jets traded for Devonte Adams. What did we hear for the first couple weeks? And it was two players who had known each other forever, played together forever, you know, I mean, they were basically brothers from another mother, and all we heard was, oh, they're still kind of getting the kinks worked out. They're still, oh, it's still, you know, they're not quite there yet, but they're gonna get there. And then it took them until what? Like the last month of the season before they really clicked together as players, so you can't sit there and tell me that it doesn't matter with DK Metcalf, but it most definitely mattered with the three targets in the preseason. You think three targets in the preseason matter that much. I think anything you can do in live action matters, and I agree with you. I am also the guy who has done Rams preseason games for 14 years. The last time that Sean McVay firmly believed that you shouldn't put your big-name players at risk in the preseason, do it in a joint practice. I don't need to see you in the preseason, but I'm with you. Charles, you can wonder aloud. If that's going to affect your early season sloppiness and chemistry. Don't worry, they only opened the season at the Jets against Justin Fields, the quarterback who, for all intents and purposes, he's replacing. And oh yeah, by the way, the Jets are in the building where Aaron Rodgers has played his last two years. So nothing in any way whatsoever will get blown out of proportion week one, with Aaron Rodgers and the Jets, if for some reason, the Steelers don't look up to form. Close

Tyler Shough or Spencer Rattler? Saints QB choice in trouble either way

Yahoo Sports host Andrew Siciliano, senior NFL writer Frank Schwab and senior NFL reporter Charles Robinson discuss the only remaining open quarterback job in the league and why either choice by Kellen Moore won't do much to turn New Orleans around this season. View more Video Transcript There's only one job remaining. So let's tell you about that one job. It is the job quarterbacking the New Orleans Saints, and it's between Tyler Shuck, who as a second-round pick and an older quarterback, 26 years old when they drafted him, man, he just assumed he would easily get the job. However, don't discount Spencer Rattler, friends, because Spencer Rattler rallied them back to a tie with Jacksonville this week, had a touchdown and a two-point conversion. He's got a little moxie; he's got a foot in the system, he could play a little bit; certainly, if you thought he was the guy though, you wouldn't take Tyler Shuck at 26 years old in the second round. Shuck played four drives. Rattler played five drives. Some people say maybe they'll trade for Kenny Pickett. I would push back and go, Charles, why would the Saints trade for a veteran quarterback at all? Just pick one of these two guys, and I, I don't say, what does it matter? That sounds flippant and sarcastic and mean-spirited, but I don't think they're gonna win a lot of games with either. Let's just be blunt. They're closer to a drive-through window than a Super Bowl window. Just go with Shuck. Yeah, it's like he's, yeah, yeah, that's the thing. He's not a developmental guy. Like, if he doesn't play right away, what the heck did I, I've been saying all offseason: draft him. It makes no sense. Just take this thing, but I, I unfortunately drafted him. Yeah, you have to draft him; if he doesnt, I, I've watched every snap of Saints preseason football, unfortunately this year, and I could tell you, I probably think Rattler is the better choice right now, as sad as that sounds, but either way, this is a bad Andrew. I, you say the only team I haven't been positive about is the Browns. I will put the Saints in that category too. The Saints are going to be awful. Like Kellen Moore, I hope they have patience with him because they're gonna be bad, bad, bad. Frank, in our final minute, I read your entire column about, like, the whole wrap-up of the preseason. Thank you. It was a great cheat sheet as I was flying home from the one game that I saw in person. You watched them all. I get it. It's part of the job, but every snap of the Saints in the preseason, I deserve hazard pay, hazard pay. I'm gonna be putting in for that. Joey, if you're still listening, I'm, I'm putting in hazard pay. I haven't watched the Saints team. Oh, they're bad. Were you wearing a guardian cap? I was wearing a cap. Close
