BJP and RSS have no faith in social justice, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah

The Hindu02-05-2025

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the BJP and RSS do not have faith or commitment to social justice.
Speaking to reporters at Tubinakere helipad in Srirangapatna taluk near Mysuru on May 2, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the RSS, during its 100-year history, had always opposed social justice. 'From the time of Miller Commission initiated by Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, the RSS has consistently opposed social justice,' he said.
The RSS, founded in 1925, will be completing 100 years, but the organisation has never accepted reservations, he said.
Claiming that the BJP government had announced a caste census due the consistent pressure from Congress leaders, Mr. Siddaramaiah said Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi was strongly insisting on such a caste survey for the last two years while All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Mallikarjun Kharge had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue.
Though the Centre had announced a caste census along with the general population census, Mr. Siddaramaiah was unhappy that the BJP-led government had not come out with a time-frame for the exercise. He wants the caste census to be accompanied by a comprehensive socio-economic and educational survey.
The Chief Minister argued for removal of the ceiling of 50% on reservation. With such a ceiling, Mr. Siddaramaiah said reservation cannot be provided to the deserving sections in proportion to their population.
To build an equal society, there is a need to empower everybody socially, economically and educationally, he said.
Extend reservation to private sector
Mr. Siddaramaiah said he would appeal to Mr. Modi to not only fix a time frame for the caste census and take all steps necessary to remove the 50% cap on reservation, but also extend reservation to the private sector.
He urged the Centre to implement the recommendations of the Rohini Commission, which has submitted a report to the President of India about two years ago, after going through the issue of sub-categorisation of Other Backward Classes (OBC) to ensure equitable distribution of reservation benefits.
Unrest over murder in Mangaluru
On the murder in Mangaluru on May 1 night, Mr. Siddaramaiah said he had directed the police to immediately trace the accused, arrest them and take action as per the law.
He said he had spoken to the police on May 1 and the government had sent the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) to Mangaluru. He said he learnt that the murdered person was a rowdy-sheeter, and the probe into the murder is underway. Any human life is valuable, he added.
With regard to BJP's visit to the scene of murder of Suhas Shetty in Mangaluru, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the BJP is always looking for opportunities to politicise such incidents.
Referring to the Pahalgam terror strike, the Chief Minister lamented the security failure and wondered why the Prime Minister did not visit the site. Claiming that he learnt from a party leader, who visited Pahalgam, that there was no police or security personnel. 'When so many tourists visit the place, shouldn't police personnel be deployed?'
When reporters brought to his notice the reported threat calls received by Assembly Speaker U. T. Khader, Mr. Siddaramaiah said he too has received threat calls. The police had been informed and instructed to trace the callers and take necessary action, he added.

India looking for other magnet sources after China's curbs on rare earth metals

India is in talks with China on ensuring the supply of permanent magnets derived from rare earth minerals but is also working on 'alternate sources' for the critical components, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said. He said the government is in constant touch with Indian industry to speed up the development of local sources. China, which controls 90% of the supply of rare earth magnets, has imposed curbs on supplies. These magnets are essential inputs in the manufacturing of cars, electric vehicles and renewable energy equipment, among others. 'There is a concern... our embassy is in dialogue with them (China)... commerce and industry ministry is also working,' Goyal said, adding that the government had already begun work on developing alternate sources. 'Hope Good Sense Prevails' Goyal was speaking to reporters after his interaction with local industry in Bern. "In a way, it's a wake-up call for all those who have become over-reliant on certain geographies. It's a wake-up call for the whole world that you need trusted partners in your supply chain,' the minister said. Auto industry and other industry bodies have represented the matter to the government seeking an early resolution of the problem. China had in April mandated special export licences for seven rare earth elements and related magnets. It is seeking an undertaking that permanent magnets it supplies will not be re-exported to the US, nor will they find applications in the defence industry. ET reported on June 4 that nine auto component manufacturers have received endorsement from the Chinese embassy in India for importing critical rare earth magnets, but supply has not resumed as the neighbouring country's commerce ministry has not given its nod. "Obviously, there are issues around the stopping of permanent magnets from China to India, which will affect our auto sector, particularly, and several white goods and other sectors. Some companies have put in their applications, and we hope that good sense prevails and they get their approvals for permanent magnets," the minister said. The Centre is also looking to Indian Rare Earths Ltd to speed up the development of domestic resources, Goyal said. Asked if the government will consider a production-linked incentive scheme for these magnets, Goyal said he had discussed the matter with the auto industry and was confident of resolving the matter. "They are in dialogue with our innovators, startups and they say they will take care of any funding requirement or pricing correction that may need to encourage faster rollout and growth of this sector," Goyal said. On alternative sources, the minister said these could also be some technologies that India is developing. "The government, the industry and startups and innovators are all working as a team and we are confident that there may be a problem in the short run but we will emerge winners in the mid to long runs," he said. Industries minister Harshwardhan Chauhan says Centre not distributing charity to Himachal

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh industries minister Harshwardhan Chauhan on Monday said that the central govt is not distributing charity to Himachal Pradesh, but the state is only getting its share, like all other 29 states of the country. Responding to the statements made by BJP MPs Anurag Thakur, Suresh Kashyap, and others that the central govt is providing sufficient funds to Himachal, the industries minister clarified that if Himachal is getting funds under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, or MGNREGA, it is the right of the state. "It is not the case that Himachal started getting these funds only when the BJP came to power in the Centre. Himachal used to get the same funds even when the previous govt was at the Centre as per the set pattern," he added. The minister, however, accused the central govt of not releasing funds to the state govt, especially around Rs 10,000 crore under the post-disaster needs assessment (PDNA), though the state govt sent the claims to the Centre in the financial year 2023-24. He claimed that the central govt is indirectly benefiting other states ruled by the BJP or its allies. Chauhan questioned the BJP leadership in Himachal about whether they got any funds or schemes sanctioned for the hill state other than what the state is getting under the existing schemes. The cabinet minister also held former chief minister and current leader of opposition Jai Ram Thakur, as well as the previous BJP govt, responsible for putting Himachal into a financial mess and a vicious cycle of loans.
