First Genesis Hybrid SUV To Take On BMW X5 In 2026 Showdown

Miami Herald17 hours ago

For a relatively young carmaker like Genesis, there are still many firsts ahead for the company as it slowly aligns with the more complete model lineups from the likes of Mercedes-Benz and BMW. The next "first" for Genesis is a hybrid - even though it has a few EVs, Hyundai's luxury arm has yet to release a hybrid. That's set to change next year, as a new report from Korea JoongAng Daily states that the brand's first hybrid will go into production in September 2026. It's not the only hybrid planned, as Genesis deviates from an earlier goal to become an all-electric brand by 2025.
Mass production of the Genesis GV80 hybrid is scheduled to begin in September 2026, with a GV70 hybrid to follow in March 2027.
"The production of the GV80 hybrid will start in September 2026 in Ulsan, while the fully revamped GV80 hybrid is slated for the second half of 2028," said a source that was familiar with the brand's production timelines.
Although a market launch date wasn't given, it's possible that the new GV80 hybrid could arrive before the end of 2026, and it should boost what are already strong Genesis sales.
Genesis is targeting hybridization of its larger models first, as these are likely to sell strongly in the United States. In the GV80 hybrid, we expect an electric motor to be paired with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbo engine. Mercedes uses a similar setup in the GLE 450e, although that's a plug-in hybrid. Nevertheless, this will be one of the GV80 hybrid's main rivals. We do expect the GV80 hybrid to comfortably undercut the GLE 450e's starting price of $71,350, though. The same goes for the BMW X5 xDrive50e, which starts at $73,800. Interestingly, BMW has plans for an even hotter X5 hybrid.
Genesis already offers more features for a lower price than either of these rivals, and a hybrid GV80 will give brand snobs another reason to sit up and take notice.
After the GV80, hybrid powertrains are also expected for the GV70 SUV and G80 sedan. Of the three, the most intriguing update will be for the GV70, which is also set to get an EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) variant. With this setup, a gas engine will provide power for the electric motors, but it won't drive the wheels directly.
The conventional GV70 and G80 hybrids are likely to use the same 2.5-liter turbo engine as the GV80 hybrid, but possibly in different states of tune. Ultimately, Genesis is taking a more varied approach to powertrains over the next few years, instead of working towards an EV-only lineup.
"Completely transforming or transferring to EVs is taking longer than expected. We cannot push so hard and bring only EVs to the market. It was a bold goal from us years ago, but we must adjust and face the reality of differences in our customers - that not every customer is ready to go there," said Manfred Harrer, head of the Genesis & Performance Development Tech Unit at Hyundai Motor.
Over a year ago, Hyundai said it would boost hybrid production in the face of disappointing EV sales. This strategy seems to have filtered through to the Genesis luxury marque, too.

Hyundai boosts Malaysian presence with new direct subsidiary HMY

South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor has established its new subsidiary headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The new local entity, Hyundai Motor Malaysia (HMY), marks its direct entry into the Malaysian market. The company has moved from a distributor-led model with Sime Motors to a principal-led operational strategy. This change emphasises improved customer engagement with a focus on innovation and long-term growth. HMY will oversee brand, marketing, sales, and customer experience by establishing a dedicated local team. This team will enable quicker, market-driven decisions and foster a more customer-centric approach. The new subsidiary is expanding its team to build a strong nationwide dealer network with plans to grow its workforce to 100 employees by the end of the year. HMY will launch three new models in the SUV and MPV segments. It also plans to set up local assembly operations in Kedah by Q3 2025. This facility aims to produce up to seven car models over five years. Initially, the expansion will focus on assembling internal combustion engines and hybrid electric vehicles. As production ramps up, it will export approximately 30% of locally assembled vehicles to neighbouring markets. HMY also plans to enhance its dealer and after-sales network by modernising showrooms and improving digital integration. Additionally, it will upgrade its service network, with plans to expand to 25 outlets by 2030. Eric Lee, president of Hyundai Motor Malaysia, stated that the local establishment aims to bring the strength and agility of the brand 'closer to home.' Jahabarnisa Haja Mohideen, managing director of Hyundai Motor Malaysia, remarked that the country is full of untapped potential. 'It boasts the highest passenger vehicle demand in ASEAN at 35%, with a steady GDP growth of 4.3%, signalling strong consumer confidence and rising spending power,' he added. Since 2024, Hyundai Motor has announced investments in the US, Germany, India, and Brazil, among others. 2026 Acura RDX Review: Expert Insights, Pricing, and Trims

Blending sharp styling with a spacious, well-equipped interior, the 2026 RDX is Acura's biggest two-row SUV. The first RDX versions went on sale for the 2007 model year, and the current third-generation model arrived for 2019. Slotting above the smaller ADX but below the MDX in Acura's SUV lineup, the RDX competes with the BMW X3 and Lexus NX. What's New Acura called last year's RDX a refresh, so we can likely expect the 2026 RDX to emerge mostly unchanged. Changes should be light, though we still hold out hope that the brand will introduce a touchscreen interface to replace the SUV's trackpad. What We Think One of Acura's most popular models, the third-gen RDX was a darling of the segment for a time. From the outside, the small luxury SUV looks athletic and premium, an appearance that was slightly updated for 2025. Design is just as pleasing and upscale in the cabin, which also delivers good packaging and cargo space. The available 16-speaker ELS Studio elevates the passenger experience further, but overall, other rivals have surpassed the Acura in the segment. The RDX is capable of sportiness, but launches are somewhat drawn out. Although power delivery is smooth, MotorTrend testing of the A Spec Advance model revealed that tuning limits the full delivery of power unless the car is pointed straight. Handling is nimble, but the RDX rides on the stiff side, and with the road noise that permeates the cabin, everyday driving leaves something to be desired. Our biggest gripe with the RDX, though, is that the segment has largely moved on, and the Acura needs significant change to keep up with rivals. Even though the bigger MDX has been updated with an infotainment touchscreen, its smaller sibling remains saddled with the annoying old-school touchpad interface. Additionally, some competitors now offer efficient hybrid models, which seems like a missed opportunity for Acura given its corporate parent Honda has had the also small CR-V Hybrid for some years. We wanted changes this year to make a bigger positive impact, but it looks like we might have to wait for the redesign (possibly for 2028) . The RDX is still a solid luxury small SUV, but for something a little more contemporary, the BMW X3 or Genesis GV70 could be worth looking at. Performance and MPGs Look for the lineup's 2.0-liter turbo-four to return for 2026. Output should be unchanged, so 272 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. All 2026 RDXs receive a 10-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. In our most recent testing, the RDX can sprint to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds . Both launches are reasonably quick, relatively speaking. Fuel economy ratings will probably be about the same as last year, or 21/27 mpg city/highway for most models except the performance A-Spec, which returns 26 mpg highway. Those aren't great. We'd love to see improvements here to improve mpgs and range, either with the standard engine or by using a version of the CR-V Hybrid powertrain from parent company Honda. For comparison, consider the newly updated 2025 BMW X3 that offers 27/33 mpg with AWD and a driving range about 100 miles longer than the RDX's. That's a lot of extra driving before you'll need to refuel. Safety Ratings and Features Last year's RDX is an IIHS 2024 Top Safety Pick, the institute's second highest award. The ute earns primarily good ratings, but it has yet to go through IIHS' updated front impact testing. From NHTSA, the 2025 RDX earns a top five-star overall safety rating. Ratings should be similar for this year's model. The 2026 Acura RDX offers a comprehensive array of standard safety features. These include: Automatic emergency braking Lane keeping assist Blind-spot monitoring Rear cross-traffic alert Automatic high-beams Adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow Additional available tech features range from LED foglights and a 360-degree camera to rain-sensing wipers and a windshield wiper deicer. Although the list of standard and optional equipment is impressive, Acura's lane centering system still leaves room for improvement, as it can occasionally drift over lane markers. Cargo Space and Interior Room A spacious interior is an RDX strength. Legroom compares favorably to the Lexus NX and updated BMW X3. The BMW offers a larger cargo hold, though. Technology Unlike most modern systems, the RDX's infotainment setup lacks a touchscreen. Instead, drivers must navigate the 10.2-inch display using a clunky touchpad on the center console. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7.0-inch driver display, heated power front seats, speed-sensitive volume control, and ambient lighting are also standard. Moving up the trim walk unlocks a wireless phone charger, 10.5-inch head-up display, heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, power-folding side mirrors, puddle lights, a hands-free power liftgate, and other features.
