Last month, the NFL announced a new postseason award geared toward giving the best offensive linemen in the league a little national media attention.

The Protector of the Year Award will be handed out each year at the NFL Honors presentation show and will recognize the best offensive lineman that season.
Former Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams tackle Andrew Whitworth described the award best.
'This award means everything to the big guys up front,' said Whitworth. 'The Protector of the Year isn't just about stats – it's about the mindset, grit, and leadership it takes to be the foundation of a football team. It's time the men who lead, protect, and never ask for credit are recognized as the backbone of this game.'
As we approach 2025, it seems that the oddsmakers favor Buccaneers standout protector Tristan Wirfs for the award, making him an 8-1 favorite with third-beat odds behind Detroit's Penei Sewell at 3-1 and San Francisco's Trent Williams at 7-1.

A press release by the NFL noted, "The award honors individual excellence and spotlights offensive linemen, whose contributions are often overlooked in the highlight-driven nature of football. It cements their role as the foundation of every great offense. Currently, offensive linemen are the only players who aren't eligible for most on-field awards."
The winner will be selected by a panel of former offensive linemen based on skill metrics, impact, leadership, durability and strength of opponent.
The initial panel includes former players, LeCharles Bentley, Jason Kelce, Shaun O'Hara, Orlando Pace, Will Shields and Whitworth.
As the Bucs' current left tackle, Wirfs is the only player to make the Pro Bowl as a right tackle and a left tackle, and he's been voted to the Pro Bowl in four of his first five seasons in the NFL. The former Iowa Hawkeye has also received two First-Team All-Pro honors and one Second-Team All-Pro honor.

Nathaniel Hackett returns to Packers as defensive analyst

Who says you can't go home? Former Broncos head coach and Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett is now back on staff with the Packers, head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed in his Thursday press conference. Hackett will serve as a defensive analyst for the club, helping give coordinator Jeff Hafley a fresh perspective. It's a similar role to what Robert Saleh played for the offense when he joined the staff last year after being fired as Jets head coach. Luke Getsy also served as a defensive analyst last year after he'd been fired from his role as Raiders offensive coordinator. Getsy is now still on staff as a senior assistant. "He's a guy I really respect and we've had a lot of great times together," LaFleur said Thursday, via Zach Kruse of USA Today. 'It's a fresh perspective. It gives you a little different lens to see it through, talk it through," LaFleur added. "He's sitting in with our defensive staff. He's been in our linebacker room going through the film, giving them a good offensive perspective.' Hackett was the Packers' offensive coordinator under LaFleur from 2019-2021. He was then hired as Broncos head coach in 2022 and was fired after a 51-14 loss to the Rams on Christmas Day with two games remaining in the season. He then served as Jets offensive coordinator in 2023, reuniting with Aaron Rodgers. He lost play-calling duties after Saleh was fired as Jets head coach midway through the 2024 season.

Opendoor, Kohl's resume rally as meme stock frenzy continues

(Reuters) -Shares of retail favorites Opendoor Technologies and Kohl's resumed their rally on Thursday, fueled by continued meme stock euphoria and broader markets hitting record highs. Opendoor Technologies, an e-commerce platform for residential real estate, rose 19% to $2.73, adding to its more than 400% surge in July. Bullish posts last week on by EMJ Capital portfolio manager Eric Jackson helped ignite the rally. 'This is not a meme stock,' Jackson wrote Thursday. '$OPEN is a real platform with real cashflow potential. The only question is how fast we push it to full value.' Struggling department store operator Kohl's, which joined the meme stock rally earlier in the week, jumped 10.5%. Donut chain Krispy Kreme gained 1.5%, while action camera maker GoPro edged up 0.3%. "You're getting some of the meme trade," said Thomas Hayes, chairman at Great Hill Capital LLC in New York. "The big early move was a short squeeze and now this is residual short squeeze followed by people starting to come and chase the momentum." Most of these companies are loss-making, making them targets for short sellers betting the shares will fall. However, retail traders often buy these cheaper stocks, sparking rapid rallies. When this occurs, short sellers are forced to unwind positions in a phenomenon known as a short squeeze. LSEG data show most of these firms are heavily shorted. Mom-and-pop traders bought GoPro and Krispy Kreme heavily on Wednesday, with Krispy Kreme seeing its biggest one-day inflow since May 2024. The recent moves revived memories of the Reddit-driven meme stock frenzy of 2021, when amateur investors pushed up shares of video-game retailer GameStop and cinema chain AMC, burning hedge funds that were on the other side of the trade. Missouri extends Eli Drinkwitz's contract through 2029, adds money to assistant salary pool

Missouri football coach Eli Drinkwitz received a second contract extension in less than two years on Thursday, this one keeping him with the Tigers through the 2029 season while adding additional money to his salary pool for assistants. Drinkwitz signed an extension in December 2023 that paid him $46 million through the 2028 season, along with incentives such as $250,000 for a first-round appearance in the College Football Playoff and $750,000 for winning the national championship. 'I'm incredibly grateful for the continued belief in our vision,' said Drinkwitz, who is entering his sixth season at Missouri. 'I'm proud of the staff we've assembled and excited to keep pushing forward together.' Drinkwitz was the SEC coach of the year two years ago, when he led the Tigers to an 11-2 record and a Cotton Bowl win. They followed that up with a 10-3 record and a Music City Bowl win last season, giving the program back-to-back double-digit win seasons for the first time in a decade and only the third time in school history. Drinkwitz, who arrived in 2020 after one season leading Appalachian State, is 38-24 with the Tigers, breaking Dan Devine's record for the most wins in the first five seasons by a Missouri coach. He also has coached 17 players that were chosen in the NFL draft, including Armand Membou, the seventh overall pick of the New York Jets in April. 'The consistent progress we've seen under Coach Drinkwitz's leadership is inspiring,' Missouri athletic director Laid Veatch said in a statement. 'This extension, along with increased investment in our coaching and support staff, reflects our commitment to sustaining success at the highest level.' The Tigers open the season Aug. 28 against Central Arkansas with a roster that will have to replace numerous stars, including Membou, second-round pick Luther Burden III at wide receiver and Brady Cook at quarterback. But the Tigers have a favorable schedule with their first six games at home, including rival Kansas and SEC foes South Carolina and Alabama. The school is also undertaking a $250 million renovation of Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium due to be completed next year. 'Mizzou football is at a pivotal moment, marked in part by the historic Memorial Stadium Centennial Project,' Board of Curators chair Todd Graves said. 'Coach Drinkwitz is the right leader to ensure we uphold our championship culture and achieve wins that make Tiger fans proud across the state and around the world.' ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 all season.
