Empowering schoolkids to save water brings rewards
HEADMASTER Md Zainudin Ngadiman and teacher Rashide Roziman of SK Polis Depot Kuala Lumpur decided to teach their pupils about water conservation by making them peer educators.
Zainudin and Rashide encouraged the pupils to act out water-saving methods in one-minute videos for social media to promote awareness of the importance of water conservation.
Zainudin then submitted the content to the 'Save Water Mission together with BoBoiBoy' competition last year.
BoBoiBoy is a Malaysian animated television series created by Monsta Studios that sees the main character involved in water conservation.
Thanks to the pupils' efforts and creativity, SK Polis Depot Kuala Lumpur won the competition by Air Selangor Sdn Bhd, earning the school RM15,000 worth of beautification work.
Three consolation winners – Azan Integrated Islamic School in Sepang, SK Seri Fajar in Kuala Kubu Bharu and SK Taman Tasik in Ampang – each won RM5,000 for school beautification, with prizes handed out by Air Selangor chief executive officer Adam Saffian Ghazali at the ceremony in Subang Jaya.
SK Polis Depot Kuala Lumpur pupils Nur Hawa Syaurah Hasrin Faisal and Afiq Irfan Mohd Khairy, both 12, said with the hotter weather, water was a valuable resource that could not be wasted.
Afiq Irfan said the knowledge he had gained was being shared beyond the classroom, as he was informing his neighbours about the issue as well.
Adam Saffian said last year's competition was open to primary schools but this year, the competition in conjunction with World Environment Day in June, will be open to both primary and secondary schools.
At the event, Air Selangor signed a memorandum of collaboration with Monsta Studios to strengthen joint efforts in promoting water-conservation awareness.
Adam Saffian said the memorandum outlined a three-year collaboration, starting from this year until 2027.
'We aim to implement various programmes and produce a series of cartoons over the next three years to instil sustainability values,' he said.
Monsta Studios managing director Kee Yong Pin said Monsta remained committed to raising awareness and educating on water conservation.

Famed Malaysian chef Darren Chin receives knighthood from the French Republic
On a warm Wednesday night last week, about 20 people are gathered at the home of the French ambassador to Malaysia, His Excellency Axel Cruau. The atmosphere is convivial and filled with a surge of anticipation, as the small crowd clamour around Cruau and the man of the moment – famed Malaysian chef Darren Chin, whose face betrays the wealth of emotions he is experiencing. The reason for this display of emotion from a chef known for his masterful Michelin-starred French food? Chin is now only the second Malaysian chef to be conferred the Chevalier de l'Ordre du Merite Agricole, or the Order of Agricultural Merit, which is bestowed by the French Republic to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to agriculture, including food and culinary arts. 'It's like a knighthood. You can call him 'Sir',' jokes Cruau, who adds that once a person is made a chevalier, they will have the title for life. The order of Agricultural Merit was established in 1883 and has three categories: commanders, officers and knights. Recipients of the knighthood have included Louis Pasteur (who invented pasteurisation) and famed French chef Jacque Pepin. Chin meanwhile is no less star-studded. His father David Chin founded the famed Dave's Deli chain of eateries, which Darren helped run. Upon his return to Malaysia in 2014, he started DC by Darren Chin, which champions French cuisine and has since earned a Michelin star off the back of his sheer talent and hard work. It is this and so much more that cemented to Cruau that Darren was the perfect person to nominate for this rare title. 'Darren is an icon in French gastronomy here in Kuala Lumpur. Actually I've been here for two-and-a-half years and one of the first events I attended was the Michelin Star reveal in KL where he was awarded a star,' Cruau says. 'So I knew him from the start. And I had the occasion to taste his food. 'But it was more his personality that was appealing. He's a philosopher of food and of transitioning his knowledge to younger chefs. 'So I said, 'Well, this is exactly the kind of person who deserves to be awarded the title, because Darren is also someone who is close to France and the spirit and values of French gastronomy. 'So for me, it was pure logic that we should ask for him to get the award,' says Cruau. To qualify for the chevalier category of the Order of Agricultural Merit, a person has to be at least 30 years and have been in service for 15 years. The nomination for Order of Agricultural Merit also has to be validated by France's Minister of Agriculture and Food who has to sign off on the person selected for the title. In Malaysia, Cruau says he wanted to restart the process of awarding these titles when he took over as the ambassador as the title hadn't really been administered to Malaysians. While Cruau nominated Darren for the title, the eventual approval has to come from France's Minister of Agriculture and Food. 'In Malaysia, it wasn't really being done and I thought it was unfair not to recognise Malaysian chefs who are French-trained and French-inspired. 'Because it's a way for France to work with the chefs and honour them,' he says. Darren meanwhile is over-the-moon but says he is still in disbelief. ''I just cannot believe it. It means so much to me to get this recognition from the French government,' he says. In many ways, Darren believes this is further inspiration to keep going strong and continue to hone his skills and appreciation for French gastronomy. 'Essentially French food culture has so much of a history and so much of a background that it's undeniable. I feel not just proud as a Malaysian cooking French food, but I feel extremely proud of how I have been able to fully express my heart and my soul through my food. 'So, lastly, I would just like to quote something. 'You are only as good as your last service', and in the hospitality world, it's only moving forward and never looking back,' says Darren, smiling.

(Video) HK Actor Louis Koo Praises The Acting Skills Of Local Stars Tan Li Yang & Phei Yong
Over the weekend, the cast of the upcoming Hong Kong movie, 'Behind The Shadows (私家侦探)' dazzled fans at the Malaysia press tour. While in Kuala Lumpur, the stars met with reporters and shared some stories from the movie filming. The movie stars Hong Kong actors Louis Koo (古天樂) and Raymond Wong (黃浩然), as well as actress Chrissie Chau (周秀娜). The film is also significant for having several local talents in the cast, including media personality Phei Yong (培永) and actress Yumi Wong (黄诗棋). One of the questions asked during the press conference was about working with Malaysian talents. In response to the question, Louis has nothing but praise for them. The renowned actor specifically mentioned actor Tan Li Yang (陈立扬), who wasn't at the press tour due to work. Louis praised Tan Li Yang's performance, especially during emotional scenes, saying, 'He had a scene where he had to grieve for his girlfriend. His two takes were enough to move people, but he had high requirements for himself. When he wasn't satisfied with the first take, he asked for a re-do'. Louis said the actor's dedication was what earned his praise. Meanwhile, Phei Yong gave himself zero points for his acting, noting that he still needed to polish his skills. However, Louis contested, saying that Phei Yong has a bright future in acting. The 54-year-old even said, 'His acting isn't bad at all. Out of 100 points, I'd give him at least 60 points'. Castmate Raymond Wong also praised the Malaysian star, saying, 'He (Phei Yong) said he was nervous during filming, but I think his acting was very good'. The Hong Kong cast also spoke about filming in Malaysia. Unsurprising, the stars mentioned the food here, saying they loved the local cuisine. Chrissie also revealed that she had to restrain herself from eating so much as she had to be in shape for an upcoming project. However, she said she gave in because she couldn't resist chowing down on her favourite Malaysian dishes. We're glad the cast had so many fond memories from the filming. 'Behind The Shadows' will premiere nationwide on 12th June 2025 (Thursday).
