The statement came hours after PM Modi, along with chief minister Yogi Adityanath, reached Kanpur where he inaugurated Kanpur Metro train, Panki power project and Neyveli Lignite power plant among a host of other development projects worth a total of over Rs 47,000 crore.
"In the last eight years that the BJP has been in the government in UP, they have not done any development work. Despite being in government for so many years, BJP people from the Centre and in the state are cutting ribbons (inaugurating) of development projects of the Samajwadi Party government," Akhilesh said in a statement issued on Friday.
"Today the projects inaugurated by the Prime Minister in Kanpur were initiated during the SP government," Akhilesh said. Akhilesh said every development project that was launched during the SP government was dedicated to the people of the state. "Extension of Panki thermal power plant, Neyveli Lignite Power Plant and Kanpur Metro were projects that were launched during the SP regime. Today BJP people are all praises for these projects," he said.
The SP national president said the BJP should face the people and appraise them if the government has any scheme for the Lal Imli in Kanpur. Set up in Kanpur in 1876, Lal Imli was known the world over for its high-quality woollen products, so much so that the trademark was regarded as a guarantee of pure wool. The mill is shut today, and workers have not got their salary for the past 34 months, he said.
"Not only in Kanpur, the Metro Rail projects in Lucknow and Noida, that the Prime Minister was made to inaugurate, were projects that the SP government had got completed," Akhilesh said, citing Agra-Lucknow Expressway, International stadium in Lucknow, IT City, Janeshwar Mishra Park as examples of world-class projects that were conceived and executed by the SP government and dedicated to the people of the state.

The former UP CM said most of the projects launched under the BJP government have been plagued by corruption. "The Jal Jeevan Mission launched by the BJP government has turned into a loot mission," he said. Akhilesh went on to cite specific instances to underline BJP's corruption. "In April, an overhead water tank in Lakhimpur burst and crumbled under the weight of rising corruption under the BJP government. In May, another overhead water tank collapsed in Sitapur because of the same reason," Akhilesh said.

Babulal sheds crocodile tears for tribal land owners, says JMM
Ranchi: JMM general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya on Sunday accused the leader of the opposition and state BJP president Babulal Marandi of shedding crocodile tears for tribal raiyyats (landowners), who are opposing land acquisition for second campus of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (Rims) in Nagri area under the Kanke block. Speaking to media persons on Sunday, Bhattacharya said during Marandi's tenure as chief minister, police firing incidents took place during which people protesting against land acquisitions for projects in Tapkara in Khunti and Neterhaat in Latehar were fired upon. Marandi should apologise for the incidents, the JMM leader said. Notably, Marandi visited Nagri on Saturday and met people, who were opposing Rims-2 in their area. Marandi alleged that the state govt wanted to displace tribals from their agricultural land but he would not allow the acquisition of even an inch without approval of the gram sabha in the villages. Reacting to Marandi's visit and statement, Bhattacharya said so far, the state govt has not issued any notification regarding the place where the new hospital would be built and according to the plan, the new hospital should come up along the ring road. He also claimed that Marandi is raising the issues to serve the interest of one Sunil Sahu. "Details will be provided later on," the JMM leader said. Bhattacharya also said Marandi as the first CM of Jharkhand, adopted the Bihar rules for administering the state which was against the vision of separate Jharkhand for preventing exploitation and protection of tribal identity and rights. He also said during that period, the opposition had demanded the framing of the state's own rules for protecting the tribal land, but Marandi ignored it. "There is a provision in the Land Acquisition and Reform Act 2013 which states that any acquired land not used for five years should be returned to the raiyyats. Marandi must request the BJP-led central govt to return the surplus land of Steel Authority of India Limited, Coal India Limited and Heavy Engineering Corporation in the state," Bhattacharya said. He also took potshots at Marandi saying that when BJP national president and Union health minister J P Nadda called the state's health minister Irfan Ansari for discussions on improving the health facilities in Jharkhand, the state BJP president felt bad about it as he was ignored.

'If verdict out abroad but trial on in India, case must be heard at length'
NEW DELHI: A Delhi court observed that a case in which the judgment was rendered by a foreign court, and was also sub judice in India, must be heard at length. The court of Additional Sessions Judge Sumit Dass made the observation on May 5 while hearing the submissions of Shravan Gupta, an accused in a money laundering case. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Gupta was convicted by a court in Abu Dhabi last year for the same offences as charged by the Enforcement Directorate - fraud, deception, and embezzlement. Gupta and six others, including a private company, filed a revision petition against a magisterial court order of November 2024 in which the court issued them and others summons for the offences of fraud and cheating. Meanwhile, the court stayed proceedings in the matter until July 4, the next hearing date. The court also issued notice to the ED and the state to file a reply in the matter. The case is related to a complaint filed by Emaar India Limited against MGF Development Limited, Gupta and 11 others for large-scale fraud and siphoning of Rs 180 crore. In April, Gupta moved an application before the court, submitting that on February 27, 2024, a court in Abu Dhabi had convicted of the same offences as in the present case. "Passing of the said judgment was concealed by the complainant from this court as well as from the trial court," the plea stated. Gupta pleaded that he cannot be prosecuted again, and the impugned order deserves to be set aside. The entire prosecution is bad in law in view of Article 20(2) of the Constitution of India as well as Section 300 CrPC, Gupta stated.

Chandigarh civic body collects ₹60 crore property tax during two-month rebate period
CHANDIGARH : The Chandigarh municipal corporation has achieved an unprecedented property tax collection of approximately Rs 60 crore during April and May rebate period. Citizens submitted payments via e-Sampark Centres and banks, with e-Sampark Centres, which operated until 8pm on Saturday, receiving the majority of payments. The final figures might increase slightly, but this collection marks the highest amount ever received during a two-month rebate period. The detailed breakdown of residential and commercial property tax collections will be published on Monday after data compilation. Sources indicate that whilst commercial properties contributed the larger share of the amount, residential property owners represented the highest number of taxpayers. "As the rates of commercial property tax are substantially higher than the residential properties, the collected amount of commercial property tax is relatively higher than the residential tax category. On the other hand, the maximum taxpayers fall in the residential taxpayers category," sources in the MC said. Official records indicate that e-Sampark Centres collected approximately Rs 48 crore, whilst banks received around rupees 12 crore. About 65,000 taxpayers participated during April and May, with roughly 51,000 from residential properties and the remainder from commercial establishments. The tax branch officials worked diligently over these two months, encouraging taxpayers to utilise the rebate period. The MC addressed numerous queries from taxpayers who visited their office during this period. The previous year's collection during April and May 2024 was approximately rupees 39 crore, with lower tax rates. Following the Chandigarh administration's decision to double property tax rates in April, the MC anticipates collecting around rupees 70 crore this financial year, excluding arrears. Currently, Chandigarh has 1.42 lakh properties, comprising 1.12 lakh residential and 30,000 commercial properties. The rebate period concluded on May 31, and those who missed the deadline must now pay a 25% penalty on their total property tax amount, plus 12% interest. During the rebate period, residential properties received a 20% rebate, whilst commercial properties received 10%.
