Broncos roster: Marvin Mims (No. 19) is a do-everything weapon
Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at third-year wide receiver Marvin Mims, No. 19.
Before the Broncos: Mims (5-11, 182 pounds) was a speedster at the University of Oklahoma, where he excelled at special teams and wide receiver. Mims played three years (2020-22) in Norman, Oklahoma. Mims was the kind of do-it-all player that NFL coaches love. Mims caught 123 passes for 2,398 yards and 20 touchdowns, rushed five times for 35 yards, and returned 33 punts for 391 yards and three kickoffs for 108 yards.
Mims' abilities all over the field caught the eye of Broncos head coach Sean Payton, who selected Mims in the second round (63rd overall) in the 2023 NFL draft.
Broncos tenure: Mims struggled to find his place on offense in 2023, catching only 22 passes for 307 yards and one touchdown, with two fumbles. However, Mims excelled on special teams, returning 15 kickoffs for 397 yards and one touchdown (leading the NFL), and 19 punts for 319 yards. Mims earned a Pro Bowl nod and second-team All-Pro honors as a return specialist following his rookie campaign.
In 2024, Mims figured out a place on offense, catching 39 passes for 503 yards and six touchdowns while rushing 13 times for 42 yards. Mims provided several big moments on offense, including a game-tying touchdown against the Cincinnati Bengals and an electrifying 93-yard touchdown catch against the Cleveland Browns. On the special teams side, Mims led the NFL with 15.7 yards per punt return (26 returns for 408 yards) and seven kickoff returns for 194 yards, earning Mims yet another Pro Bowl nod and a first-team All-Pro selection.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: Lock. With Mims playing at a high level on special teams, the Broncos will continue to use him on kickoffs and punt returns. Following an explosion on offense during the 2024 season, Mims also figures to remain a key receiver for Denver in 2025.

Why Ole Miss basketball coach Chris Beard studied Tom Brady in offseason
OXFORD — Ole Miss basketball coach Chris Beard completed some self-assigned homework over the offseason. Beard said in a press conference on June 17 that he picks one person to study after his team's season ends. It's an open-ended task. The only requirement is his subject must be a winner. Advertisement "It doesn't always have to happen in the form of basketball," Beard said. "It doesn't always have to be athletic minded. I just try to study successful people and try to learn what makes them tick." Tom Brady certainly fits the bill. Beard chose to study Brady's career and mentality in the offseason. Brady won seven Super Bowls in his 23-year NFL career and retired in 2023 as the all-time leader in Super Bowl victories. Much of Beard's study came from podcasts. He searched for longform interviews where Brady spoke in an unfiltered manner. "What he did in football kind of speaks for himself," Beard said. "In retirement this past year or so he's pretty vocal and does an interview from time to time. Always really interested in the guy who will really talk and not all the fluff. One of the cool things about today's word, all these podcasts and stuff, these winners and elite people will talk more free than they used to back in the day." Advertisement Beard said he may have shaken Brady's hand briefly at one event or another, but he's not had a meaningful conversation with the New England Patriots legend who was the No. 199 pick in the 2000 NFL Draft out of Michigan. Beard admires the relentlessness Brady played with. "He's kind of the ultimate chip-on-your-shoulder guy," Beard said. "Wasn't supposed to play in college, ends up being the best player. Wasn't supposed to be a draft pick, ends up being the best player." Beard doesn't just internalize the information. The true value comes from boiling down what makes Brady tick and passing it along to his players such as junior forward Augusto Cassia. "Ultimately I get it down to the CliffsNotes version and try to get that information to the players," Beard said. "I don't expect Gusto to spend all the time that I spend on those projects. But if I can get him the bottom line and five minutes of information that it took me four months to gather, that's kind of one of my responsibilities as a coach." Rams re-sign former Georgia Bulldog days after his release
Rams re-sign former Georgia Bulldog days after his release The Los Angeles Rams have re-signed former Georgia Bulldogs and Clemson Tigers cornerback Derion Kendrick. The Rams re-signed Kendrick just a few days after they waived him. Kendrick spent the first three seasons of his NFL career with Los Angeles, but missed the 2024 NFL season after suffering a torn ACL in training camp. The 6-foot, 200-pound cornerback started 18 of 32 games during his first two seasons with the Rams. If fully healthy, then Kendrick is expected to compete for a starting role with the Rams or to at least make Los Angeles' active roster for games. The Rams drafted Kendrick with a sixth-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft. During Kendrick's last healthy season in 2023, he recorded 49 tackles, 10 pass deflections and one interception. Kendrick participated in organized team activities, but it is unclear if he is able to join the team in Maui, Hawaii, for minicamp from June 16-18. Kendrick played the first three years of his college football career at Clemson before he transferred to Georgia for the 2021 season. He helped Georgia win a national championship and came up big for the Dawgs in the College Football Playoff. The Rams have four former Georgia Bulldogs on their roster in Kendrick, quarterbacks Matthew Stafford and Stetson Bennett and offensive lineman Warren McClendon.

Butler basketball schedules two-game series with perennial NCAA tournament team
INDIANAPOLIS — It's becoming somewhat of a rivalry over the past two seasons and will extend to home campuses. Butler basketball scheduled a home-and-home with Boise State, a program it has met each of the past two seasons. The Bulldogs will host the Broncos on Dec. 6 at Hinkle Fieldhouse before making a return trip to Idaho for the 2026-27 season. Times and TV assignments have not yet been announced. It's a quality addition to the schedule as Boise State has averaged 24.8 wins per season the past four seasons, and have three NCAA tournament berths in that span. Each of the two meetings in the all-time series have happened at neutral sites. Butler's season ended April 2 in Las Vegas at the inaugural College Basketball Crown, where the Broncos won 100-93 despite a career-high 30 points from Finley Bizjack. Butler won the first meeting between the two, 70-56, to secure fifth place in the ESPN Invitational on Nov. 26, 2023 in Orlando. The Bulldogs are headed to White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia for their early season multi-team event. It was announced Tuesday that they would play South Carolina and Virginia there and avoid a second game against Northwestern, which Butler will play in the Indy Classic on Dec. 20 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The rest of the known schedule includes games against Southern Indiana on Nov. 5, IU-Indy on Nov. 8 and Chicago State on Nov. 11 all at Hinkle Fieldhouse to open the season. Butler then will conclude its home-and-home series with SMU on Nov. 15 before heading to the two-game event Nov. 21 and 23. The Bulldogs will return home to play Eastern Michigan on Dec. 2. Two open preseason exhibitions were scheduled against in-state opponents. Another two-year agreement was scheduled with Notre Dame and then Indiana State was added. Former Butler player Matthew Graves is in his second season leading the Sycamores. The Bulldogs had a late addition to their 2025 recruiting class with Guerin Catholic's Bryson Cardinal, the son of former NBA forward Brian Cardinal. He's among four other freshmen heading to campus, and includes Lawrence North guard Azavier Robinson.
