The gathering, which began at 7.50pm, opened with the Sabah state anthem and a prayer before the crowd chanted 'Tangkap Penjenayah' (Arrest the Criminals) in unison. People from all walks of life attended the event, showing unity in their grief and determination to seek answers. Political leaders from both sides of the divide were present, reflecting the broad support for the call to end bullying and protect children. Among them was Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew, who attended with volunteers and representatives from local non-governmental organisations. She stressed the need for reforms to ensure that tragedies like Zara's death do not recur, highlighting the importance of a safe environment for students, especially in boarding schools. Christina also called for a proactive approach in tackling bullying, with early intervention to identify risks before they escalate into life-threatening situations. She emphasised that the issue extended beyond schools, noting that bullying has affected people in workplaces and other settings across the country. Throughout the night, the crowd chanted 'We Are All Zara' as a reminder that her memory fuels the push for change and that no other child should endure the same fate. The atmosphere was one of solidarity, with attendees sharing the grief of Zara's mother, Noraidah Lamat, and pledging to continue the fight for justice. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Azizah calls for detailed review of juvenile offence penalties

Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 By: Noor Zafira Zayn Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The proposal to review penalties for juvenile offenders should be examined in greater detail, said Sabah Institute for Development Studies (IDS) chairperson Datuk Seri Azizah Mohd Dun ( pic ). She said any legal amendments must be considered carefully, noting that such decisions should be based on a thorough investigation rather than a single case. Azizah was responding to a recent suggestion by the Sabah Consumers Affairs and Protection Society (Caps) to lower the age limit for juvenile offenders from 18 to under 15 in view of the rise in youth-related crime. She stressed that a comprehensive study involving experts and multiple stakeholders is needed to develop the most effective approach in addressing juvenile offences, including bullying in schools, workplaces, and within families. Azizah added that tackling such issues requires collective responsibility from parents, communities, and authorities, with a strong focus on prevention through understanding current trends and potential risks. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Malaysian tycoon Ong Beng Seng spared jail after Singapore scandal

Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 By: Bloomberg Text Size: Ong Beng Seng last week pleaded guilty to abetting former Singapore transport minister S Iswaran to obstruct the course of justice. (EPA Images pic) SINGAPORE: Convicted billionaire Ong Beng Seng will avoid jail in Singapore despite his involvement in a scandal that stunned a city-state known for being one of the world's least corrupt nations. The Malaysian tycoon, who gained international fame for bringing Formula One racing to Singapore, was granted the reprieve by a district judge at a sentencing hearing this afternoon. Ong will be fined S$30,000, the judge said, citing his dire medical condition. The 79-year-old last week pleaded guilty to one charge of abetting former Singapore transport minister S Iswaran to obstruct the course of justice. Prosecutors said Ong in 2023 helped to bill Iswaran for a S$5,700 business class ticket while authorities were investigating the matter. The ex-politician was jailed last year after obtaining gifts that included tickets to Singapore's Grand Prix, a luxury hotel stay and other valuable items while in public office. Ong's charge related to a 2022 trip to the Fifa World Cup quarterfinals in Doha, which he had invited Iswaran to. Under Singapore's Penal Code, Ong could have been imprisoned for up to seven years in addition to being fined. Prosecutors had earlier sought eight weeks' jail for him, but his defence had asked for a fine instead based on his medical conditions, which include advanced multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer that has compromised his immune system. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
