Kaizer Chiefs face challenging start to the season with tough fixture list as trip to Mamelodi Sundowns looms large
Though Kaizer Chiefs will not be involved in the opening weekend of local football action in the MTN8, they will still have their work cut out from the outset in their new Betway Premiership campaign.
With Chiefs having finished outside the top eight in the league the last two seasons, there are increased expectations that the Soweto Giants will produce a much better showing.
Even though Chiefs won their first piece of silverware with the Nedbank Cup title last season, it did not hide their underperformance in the league.
Now, Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi will have to ensure his troops hit the ground running from their first clash.

Lucas Ribeiro walks out of Sundowns: Qatari club close in
Lucas Ribeiro Costa has rocked Mamelodi Sundowns by abruptly exiting their pre-season camp in Rustenburg on Saturday, as transfer negotiations reach boiling point. The Brazilian attacker, tipped as a leading contender for the Footballer of the Year award, requested to leave the camp just days after joining up with the squad, a move that strongly hints at an imminent transfer. Masandawana are currently sharpening their preparations at Royal Marang ahead of the 2025/2026 season, which kicks off this Sunday evening with a blockbuster MTN8 quarter-final against Richards Bay FC at Lucas Moripe Stadium. But all eyes have now turned to Ribeiro's future after his unexpected departure. Since arriving in June 2023, Ribeiro has proven indispensable to Sundowns. His electric form delivered 25 goal contributions in 51 appearances, playing a pivotal role in the club's historic eighth straight league title triumph. Following their FIFA Club World Cup journey, the Brazilian rejoined training on 21 July. And linked up with the squad at Chloorkop before heading to Rustenburg. But within days, he asked to leave, fuelling speculation about his next destination. While top clubs from France, Belgium, and Brazil, including Fluminense, have shown serious interest. Fresh reports from the Middle East have thrown a twist in the tale. 'Qatar Sports Club reportedly began negotiations in early July for the signature of Lucas Ribeiro,' claim sources close to the matter. Latest developments suggest the Qatari outfit is on the brink of sealing a deal for the 26-year-old winger. Sundowns have not officially confirmed Ribeiro's departure. But their decision to allow him to leave the camp signals that the club may already be planning for life without him. His availability for Sunday's high-stakes encounter now hangs in the balance. With his sudden absence leaving supporters and analysts reading between the lines. 'Sundowns granted Ribeiro leave from the camp,' a source close to the club confirmed, further fuelling transfer speculation. Where will Lucas Ribeiro land, Fluminense or Qatar SC? Kaizer Chiefs: Six matches but ONLY three goals scored
Former Kaizer Chiefs left-back Tsepo Masilela is concerned about Amakhosi's attack going into the new season. The Soweto giants only signed Flavio da Silva in the attacking department, having parted ways with Ranga Chivaviro. In the six matches they played so far in pre-season, Chiefs only netted three times. Speaking on Soccer Beat, the retired defender said it should concern the management that Amakhosi have only scored three times so far in pre-season. 'They need goals; if you don't score goals, you don't win soccer games. Listen, they've played six games, if I'm not mistaken and they have only scored three goals. Masilela said it should worry Kaizer Chiefs given the fact that they failed to score against a side like Asante Kotoko. 'If you struggle to score against them, then it's a worry going into the league, you're going to face stronger opposition, more organised and they can hurt you.' To be honest, they don't look ready, especially looking at their final game. I'm also going to mention Lilepo, how he came last season and how everyone was talking about him. Since pre-season, he hasn't threatened; he has dropped a bit. It tells you that they need to work very hard in attack,' Masilela said. When asked if Chiefs should sign former Orlando Pirates star Zakhele Lepasa, he felt the lanky striker might not be fit enough. 'My worry with Lepasa is that he hasn't played football in a while and we don't know how long it will take for him to get back into the groove,' he said. 'He is available for free if they can get a deal done. We are not seeing much of Ashley (Du Preez), or (Tashreeq) Morris, so we need three or four upfront,' he said. The former Bafana Bafana left-back encouraged Kaizer Chiefs to sign Dzenan Zajmovic. He has good touches, has football brains and he can link up play, drop and play in spaces. That's what i like, he is more involved, he is not just a guy waiting to score goals,' he added. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
