CM Majhi's ‘PR blitz' vs Naveen Patnaik's offensive — gloves off in BJP, BJD battle

With the Mohan Charan Majhi-led BJP government in Odisha marking its first anniversary on Thursday, the battle of narratives between the BJP and the principal Opposition BJD has intensified. While the BJP is going all out to showcase its 'achievements' during its first year at the helm, the BJD has mounted an offensive to highlight the Majhi government's 'failures'.
On Tuesday, BJD president and ex-chief minister Naveen Patnaik launched a 'Janajagarana Abhiyan' (peoples' awakening campaign) as part of which the regional party plans to reach out to the people across the state to 'expose' the 'failures' of the BJP government. He also took a swipe at the BJP's publicity blitz.
After ruling Odisha for five consecutive terms since 2000, the Patnaik-led BJD was trounced by the BJP in the Assembly polls last June. Patnaik has now marked one year as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly.
On Tuesday, CM Majhi also addressed a press conference, asserting that his government has been 'successful in fulfilling a majority of the promises it made to the people'. He also announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Odisha on June 20 to mark the government's one-year celebrations – his sixth visit over the last one year.
According to BJP sources, Modi, during the visit, will unveil the party's vision document proposing to make Odisha a prosperous state by 2036 — when the state will commemorate its centenary year.
In his speech Tuesday, Patnaik took on the BJP, saying: 'It's been a year since the BJP has formed its government in Odisha. They refer to the government as 'lokonka sarkar' (peoples' government). But where are the people? Development doesn't come from long speeches and glossy advertisements'.
He also raised three issues – the BJP government's decision to bring the curtains down on his regime's Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY), the 'weakening' of the Mission Shakti initiative scheme meant for rural women, and the agrarian policy – to target the BJP, claiming that these measures went against the interests of the people.
On the BSKY, Patnaik claimed that despite the BJP's implementation of the Centre's Ayushman Bharat Yojana, his own government's scheme was 'more beneficial'. The Majhi government replaced the Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY) with the Gopabandhu Jana Arogya Yojana, even as Odisha joined the Ayushman Bharat Yojana in January this year. The Ayushman Bharat scheme is now being implemented along with the Gopabandhu Jana Arogya Yojana in the state.
'Over 90 per cent of people were covered under BSKY. Though the Ayushman Bharat scheme has been started here, people face difficulties getting treatment. People can't get treatment without money,' Patnaik said.
He also accused the current dispensation of 'weakening' Mission Shakti initiative. A flagship scheme launched in 2001 by the then Patnaik government, the scheme was launched as an integrated programme for women empowerment and was meant, among other things, to help promote socio-economic activities among them.
This scheme was once believed to have given the BJD a political advantage, raking in one of its largest voter base – women. However, the tables turned in the 2024 elections, when the BJP's promise of the Subhadra direct cash transfer scheme for women was believed to have dented this key base of the BJD.
The Subhadra scheme was launched on September 17 last year, with the BJD calling it an attempt to 'weaken' the Mission Shakti initiative.
Patnaik also accused the Majhi government of 'obstructing women's empowerment'. 'The rural women who used to travel to Dubai and Singapore are disheartened now. This is the biggest achievement of the BJP government…the women of Odisha will not forgive this,' he said.
Speaking about the agrarian problems in Odisha, the BJD chief also underlined the difficulties faced by farmers at the mandis, saying that they were now 'at the mercy of the middlemen and millers'.
Senior BJD leader Sarada Prasanna Jena alleged that the BJP government has failed on all fronts and that the BJD has planned to 'expose its lies'. As part of its campaign, the BJD has announced that it would hold two rallies at Jajpur on June 13 over women issues and at Puri on June 18 over issues concerning youth and students.
'The promises made to the people have turned into betrayal. They (government) have been using falsehood to mislead people. The government has been making tall claims, but the reality is starkly different. Despite a double-engine government, Odisha is being neglected in every sector. We will expose their lies,' Jena told reporters.

AAP to protest against bulldozer politics on June 29: Saurabh

Stepping up its attack on the Chief Minister Rekha Gupta-led Delhi Government over what it termed its 'anti-poor policies', the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday announced a mass protest against the demolition of slum clusters in the national Capital. AAP Delhi unit President Saurabh Bharadwaj said that the party will lead a major demonstration at Jantar Mantar on June 29 at 10 AM, demanding justice for lakhs of slum dwellers. Bharadwaj accused the BJP-led Delhi government of betraying the urban poor. 'The BJP promised 'Jaha Jhuggi, Wahan Makaan' but is instead bulldozing people's homes without providing alternative housing', he said. He also cited the tragic incident in Bawana where a fire in a slum killed two children and pointed out that no minister or MLA visited the site. 'Shockingly just two days later, bulldozers were sent to demolish the entire cluster', he alleged, questioning if the fire was part of a larger conspiracy. Bharadwaj also highlighted the demolition of over 800 homes in the historic Madarasi Camp, where generations of Tamil families have lived for decades, despite holding housing guarantee cards. He challenged the ruling BJP to bring a law in Parliament to protect slums. 'The BJP cannot hide behind court rulings. They are not going to the Supreme Court nor making laws to save the poor,' he said. Calling for unity, he appealed to all the slum dwellers to join the June 29 protest and expose the BJP's 'bulldozer politics' before the nation. It is worthy to note here that the issue of slum demolitions has become a problematic one for the BJP as both the AAP and Congress have been criticising the ruling party for failing to protect the slum dwellers in the national Capital. Bharadwaj's attack came as authorities launched a demolition drive in the Bhoomiheen camp in southeast Delhi's Govindpuri area on June 11 morning, amid heavy police deployment. However, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had said on June 8 that the authorities cannot go against demolition orders issued by the courts and stressed that the displaced residents have been provided accommodation.

India thrives under Modi's leadership: Karandlaje

Mangaluru: Shobha Karandlaje, the Union Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Labour & Employment, spoke to the press, celebrating the transformative impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership over the past decade. Reflecting on his 11 years as Prime Minister and prior 13 years as Gujarat's Chief Minister, she praised PM Modi's commitment to reshaping India into a global powerhouse. Karandlaje emphasised that Modi's 2014 election was a turning point for a nation frustrated with the previous Congress-led UPA government. 'The people wanted a leader who could deliver,' she said. 'Modi brought a clear agenda. A corruption-free administration, global stature for India, robust development, and uncompromised security.' According to her, these promises have been fulfilled. Addressing claims by Karnataka's state government that the central government has withheld funds, Karandlaje presented figures. She claimed that Karnataka received Rs. 1.44 lakh crore from 2004 to 2014 to 2014, compared to Rs. 5.42 lakh crore between 2014 and 2024, which is a 275% surge. She challenged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to address what she called 'baseless allegations' and focus on governance.

Another caste census, a slap in the face for CM: LoP

Bengaluru: Through the decision to conduct another caste census, the Congress High Command has delivered a slap in the face to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. This is a defeat for CM Siddaramaiah and a victory for Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, said Opposition Leader R. Ashoka. Speaking to reporters, he stated that the re-conduction of the caste census has caused embarrassment and defeat for CM Siddaramaiah, while it is a victory for Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar. 'We had all opposed this report. The Congress High Command also felt that this report was not right. The High Command has given a slap in the face to Siddaramaiah. Despite the CM's insistence that he would implement the report no matter what, he has now gone back on his words, so it would be appropriate for him to resign. Rs. 160 crore has been wasted, and they don't have the funds to conduct another survey. They must answer for this,' he demanded. On behalf of Kannadigas, R. Ashoka said he is raising questions to Siddaramaiah, as follows: Is it sacred only if it comes from the High Command's conch? This makes one thing clear: he has no trust in the people of the state, religious leaders, or community heads. Is he merely a follower of the High Command's orders? Who will conduct the survey? Schools have already started, and using teachers for such a massive task at this time would completely disrupt academic activities, directly impacting children's futures. So, who will the government deploy to conduct this survey within these 90 days? Online survey - an illogical step? The idea of conducting the survey online seems like another illogical step. When many literate people are still unfamiliar with online systems, how can such a survey be feasible? How will the accuracy of information and identification be ensured? What measures will the government take to prevent incorrect data entries? Who is responsible for the Rs 167 crore wasteful expenditure? Who is accountable for the massive amount already spent on the caste census? The earlier Kantharaju-Jayaprakash Hegde report has now been discarded like chaff. That report cost taxpayers Rs. 167 crore. Who will recover this money? Is this a grand drama to cover up the stampede tragedy ? Above all these developments, there are strong suspicions that the Chief Minister and his High Command are staging a grand drama to divert attention from the recent IPL victory celebration tragedy. Is this truly an attempt to shift public focus elsewhere? Struggle reaches logical conclusion When the BJP protested against the scam in the Valmiki Development Corporation, CM Siddaramaiah had admitted to the mistake. The Enforcement Directorate conducted raids much later. It has been revealed through investigations that the scam money was used for the Lok Sabha elections. The Congress leaders who misappropriated the poor's money must be punished, he said.
