Christmas Carol adaptation to feature Scrooge who ‘despises refugees'

Musical movie Christmas Karma stars The Big Bang Theory's Kunal Nayyar as a contemporary Scrooge, called Mr Sood, who is haunted by three ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, played by Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria, Pose actor Billy Porter and British singer Boy George.
Bend It Like Beckham's Gurinder Chadha hopes the audience will be invested in the transformation of Mr Sood, and his chance to be a part of a society that doesn't allow 'Scrooges, twisted and shaped by prejudice, to grow.'

Former EastEnders actor Danny Dyer, singer Pixie Lott, Bridgerton star Charithra Chandran, Downton Abbey actor Hugh Bonneville and Sanditon's Leo Suter also star in the movie.
Chadha, 65, said in her director's statement: 'Our Scrooge, called Sood, is a rich British Indian who despises poor people and refugees in particular.'
'Sood has decided that immense wealth brings him status and standing, so to hell with the poor, unemployed and disenfranchised who didn't work as hard as him to get where he is.'
The movie 'is very true to the original text and sentiment', according to Chadha, and will teach audiences 'the urgent lesson of how prejudice, poverty and division in all its forms shapes Sood and our society today'.
The British-Indian director added: 'A hundred and eighty-two years later, Dickens' novella still resonates globally in today's sometimes harsh world.'
She also said she was inspired by a family member, who lost his home in Uganda as a child, and came to Britain around Christmas time, arriving to a hostile welcome as a refugee.

'For years he didn't feel Christmas was for him and the hardships he faced as a child left him despising it,' she said.
She added: 'For me, Christmas Karma is a legacy film with a humane message that will live on long after I do.'
Soap star Dyer, 48, plays a London cabbie, while Bonneville, 61, plays the ghost of Jacob Marley.
Influenced by gospel, bhangra, Christmas carols, rap and classic pop, the soundtrack features music from Take That's Gary Barlow, former All Saints member Shaznay Lewis, and England-based Punjabi bhangra singer Malkit Singh.
Other adaptations of the classic novel, published in 1843, include a 2019 BBC mini series starring Adolescence actor Stephen Graham, written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.
On stage Doctor Who's Christopher Eccleston played Scrooge in a retelling of the story at the Old Vic in London between November 2023 and January 2024.
There are also a number of film adaptations including Scrooged (1988), starring Bill Murray as an angry TV network president and modern-day Scrooge, and The Muppets Christmas Carol (1992).
The film is in cinemas from November 14.

Vicki shaken to the core in EastEnders after Joel's twisted outburst

Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) has been left shaken in EastEnders after yet another explosive outburst from vile Joel Marshall (Max Murray). His behaviour seems to have significantly worsened in the last week. As viewers of the BBC One soap saw, Joel discovered that his mum Cleo – who he previously branded a 'slapper' – was getting remarried. He seemed to take the news well, but later headed to The Vic to steal booze with his mate Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall). When they were caught, he began to tear strips off Tommy's mum Kat (Jessie Wallace), and Ross had to drag him out of the pub. Back at home, he decided to allow his dad into his inner circle, showing him a worrying video from a sexist and misogynistic influencer who he clearly was inspired by. When Joel wandered off into the kitchen, Ross decided to delve deeper into his files and noticed that he'd shared countless videos of girls being upskirted or filmed without their knowledge online. Ross snapped, and threw the laptop into the sink before branding his son a 'disgusting little pervert.' In the aftermath, he seemed to target Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) when her SecretCam footage leaked online. He promised that he wasn't responsible and even handed over his devices to prove his innocence. She contacted the police, but ultimately nothing was done. His troubling attitude worsened when he discovered that Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James) had aborted his baby, tearing strips off her character in a conversation with Tommy. He firmly believed that she didn't have the authority to terminate the child without his permission. In tonight's episode, Joel charged into her dad Ravi Gulati's (Aaron Thiara) flat, looking to have an altercation with Avani. Her mum Priya (Sophie Khan Levy) was quick to step in and throw him out to stop Ravi attacking him. Let's face it, from history, we know that Ravi would stop at nothing to protect his children! Outside in the street, Joel lashed out at Avani and went to slap her, but Vicki stepped in before he made a huge mistake. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Marching him home, she soon saw his true colours. He reeled off a number of sick ideologies, including his belief that reproduction is the purpose of womanhood. She begged him to open his eyes and wondered if he looked at her any different having not had any children herself. More Trending Joel swiped back, saying that she walks all over his dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) and he won't be controlled in the same way. In a truly horrifying move, he asserted that if she pushes him further, she'd find out that a 'proper slapping would do [her] the world of good.' Despicable. Emotional reason why Emmerdale's Cain was able to afford the embryo transfer

A couple of days ago in Emmerdale, Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) fell in the woods while on a walk with Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb). Shortly after, she went to the toilet and realised she had started bleeding. This was a worrying development, as it was a sign that the embryo recently transferred into her body for Sarah Sugden's (Katie Hill) surrogacy had potentially been lost. Convinced that this was the case, Charity then had to discuss what to do next with Sarah. She still remained utterly desperate to become a mum, but neither of them had the cash to pay for another transfer. This is where Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) came in. Eager to help Sarah, he handed her £2k to pay the hospital. She was incredibly grateful, but Cain hadn't told Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) about the money – which was always going to create a problem. Moira has been up to her eyeballs in stress ever since the slurry tank leak. The disaster has seen Butlers Farm get sent multiple fines, many of which Moira has only just about managed to pay off. Because of the latest bill, Moira has been left contemplating her future as a farmer. The money that Cain was secretly hiding would've been a massive help – but he caused a drama by keeping it a secret from her. Moira found this out in tonight's episode because Sarah innocently mentioned it to her. Cain claimed that he had taken out a loan, but Moira knew that wasn't true. At Butlers, Cain confirmed that he had sold some items that once belonged to his mum Faith. It turns out her hip flask was solid silver, so it was worth quite a few quid. Faith absolutely adored Sarah and Cain knew that if she was still alive, she would've done anything to help her with the surrogacy. Once he had told Moira this, she sighed. Of course she understood what Cain was thinking, she just wished he would've told her sooner. The couple were back on the same page by this point and then headed to the pub. There, Sarah and Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) revealed to their entire family that Charity is pregnant with their baby. The problem though? She might not actually be. A flashback scene revealed in tonight's episode allowed us to learn there is a very real possibility Charity is pregnant with Ross Barton's (Michael Parr) baby again. After Charity kissed Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) last week, she was thrown out of the house, with Vanessa viewing the move as self destructive. As she stumbled through the village, Charity came across Ross, who was feeling sorry for himself after Steph Miligan's (Georgia Jay) departure. They kissed, and then had sex and now, Charity is pregnant. More Trending In the present day, Charity seemed adamant that Ross isn't connected to the baby at all but until a DNA test is conducted, there is no real way of knowing. Will Ross go in search of definite answers? Cirque du Soleil's annual holiday spectacular is coming back to Madison Square Garden

Cirque du Soleil, famous for defying reality (and gravity), is returning to New York City this holiday season. Due to overwhelming success, their special first and only holiday show, " Twas the Night Before..." will return to The Theater at Madison Square Garden for just a few weeks in December. Inspired by the classic poem "A Visit from Saint Nicholas" by Clement Clarke Moore, Cirque's story follows a jaded young girl who rediscovers the magic of the holidays. Directed by James Hadley, a 25-year veteran of circus productions and live theater, "Twas the Night Before..." combines classic Christmas spirit with jaw-dropping acrobatic stunts. Performed by a cast of 26 artists from all over the world, the family-friendly show features lovable characters, Christmas cheer and a Cirque du Soleil soundtrack of re-invented Christmas favorites. Plus, expect Cirque's iconic acrobatics, from a mesmerizing aerial straps duo and daring hoop diving, to gravity-defying hair suspension and high-energy dancing. You'll see tricks so surprising—from a dance performance featuring a high-flying bellhop cart to a fast-paced roller-skating performance—that you might mistake them for visions of sugar plums dancing in your head. "There's nothing like NYC during the holiday season and bringing Cirque du Soleil's 'Twas the Night Before...' back to The Theater at MSQ truly feels like coming home for the holidays," Hadley said in a statement. "To bring our unique take on the holidays to life, we took the classic poem 'A Visit from Saint Nicholas' and let our imaginations run wild, creating a world full of wonder, color and the kind of unexpected excitement only Cirque du Soleil can deliver."
