Census directly related to public welfare, must be done honestly: Mayawati
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) said the census is directly related to the welfare of people and must be conducted honestly and on time. In a series of posts in Hindi on X, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister targeted the BJP over its 11-year rule at the Centre, asking if it has been able to eradicate poverty and unemployment from the country. "The national and caste census was pending since the time of the Congress... the process has now begun. The census is directly related to public welfare, and it should be completed honestly and on time in the interest of the country," she said. The government on Monday (June 16, 2025) issued a notification for conducting India's 16th census. It will be carried out with a reference date of October 1, 2026, in the snow-bound areas like Ladakh and March 1, 2027, in the rest of the country. In the upcoming census, caste enumeration will also be done, the first such exercise since Independence. The last comprehensive caste-based count was done by the British between 1881 and 1931. Caste was excluded from all census operations conducted since Independence. The decision to include caste enumeration in the upcoming census was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on April 30. In another post, Ms. Mayawati said preparations are going on to formulate a strategy for the upcoming Bihar assembly elections. Commenting on the 11-year rule of the BJP at the Centre, she asked if the achievements that the party claims to have made are really benefiting the people. "Has the BJP been able to eradicate poverty, unemployment, pain and sufferings of the people? The people will give the answer at the right time," she said.

Khalistanis plot 'ambush' during PM Modi's Canada visit
Khalistani extremists gathered in Kananaskis, Alberta, to stage what they called an "ambush" protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in Canada to take part in the G7 summit. PM Modi is currently on a four-day, three-nation tour covering Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia. For the second leg of his tour, he reached Canada his stay in Canada, he is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Mark Carney. PM Modi will also hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Germany, Italy, and Ukraine on the sidelines of the journalist Daniel Bordman, stated prior to PM Modi's visit, a group of Khalistani separatists in Calgary staged intense anti-Modi protests, calling on Canadian PM Mark Carney to "kill Modi politics," and US President Donald Trump to "kill India politics", and going even so far as to call for an attempt to "Balkanise India". Bordman also said some protesters also stomped aggressively on the Indian flag and tore also said that amid the clamour, three microphones blared simultaneously, each one competing for attention. Incoherent shouting filled the air, while someone stomped aggressively on an Indian flag — an old staple of these protests, said per Bordman, the extremists also made a new anti-Modi song. He added that the song pushed the lines of what is acceptable in the video, a man can be seen tearing what appeared to be an Indian to another Canadian journalist, Mocha Bezirgan's post on X, Sikhs for Justice, a banned organisation in India, is calling for putting an end to "PM Modi's politics".Earlier this month, the independent journalist Bezirgan was allegedly assaulted and threatened by a group of pro-Khalistan activists in Vancouver while covering their videos also showed Khalistani protesters involving anti-India rhetoric, drawing sharp criticism from the Sikh Community back Patna Sahib Gurudwara Takht has strongly condemned the anti-India protests by Khalistani Singh, spokesperson for Takht Sri Patna Sahib, expressed his disappointment, stating, "Before PM Modi reached Canada, there were protests in which Khalistanis were also involved. The way children were used in the protests is highly condemnable."'KHALISTANI PRESENCE WANING'Bordman heaped praise on Canadian PM Carney for sending an invitation to PM Modi for the 51st G7 Summit, even as he said the Khalistani presence is seemingly waning as economic realities take centre stage in Canada-India relations since Carney took charge of office."The biggest Khalistani power display is in Surrey right now... The Khalistani menace seems to be toned down because Mark Carney is an economist. There is more money in trade with India, a real country with billions of people, than there is with a Pakistani proxy, propped up by China, who run around and run drugs for the country. We have everything India needs, and India has a huge consumer base," he told inviting PM Modi, it is a pretty hard shift for Mark Carney to distance the Liberal brand from the permissive stance on terrorists and separatists... This is a good first step to counter-radicalisation (sic)," Bordman has consistently expressed concern over what it sees as Canada's leniency toward Khalistani extremists and their relations between the two countries hit a new low in recent times, largely due to Ottawa's perceived inaction on the issue and its accusations against New Delhi of targeting pro-Khalistani elements in Watch

Cong accuses Modi Govt of delaying caste census, calls it political diversion
New Delhi, June 17 (UNI) The Congress on Tuesday slammed the Modi government for what it called a deliberate 'delay in conducting a caste census', accusing it of politicising the issue to divert public attention — much like the women's reservation bill. Congress general secretary Sachin Pilot, while addressing a press conference here, said that the demand for a caste census, led prominently by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, has long been a priority for the Congress, and the government has only "yielded to this pressure in principle, not in action". "The Modi government is simply managing headlines, not genuinely addressing the issue," Pilot said, adding that the formal notification lacks any mention of a 'caste-based enumeration'. 'The government has claimed that the caste census will begin in 2027, but concerns are growing due to the glaring budgetary shortfall. Only Rs 574 crore has been allocated, whereas such a massive exercise requires at least Rs 8,000 to 10,000 crore,' Pilot alleged. Accusing the central government of lacking both intent and commitment, Pilot said, "The objective is not just to collect data on an individual's caste but to understand the living conditions of these families and create policies to substantially improve their livelihoods." Without tangible data, no state or central government can implement targeted interventions, which is what we aimed to achieve." 'Initially, they labelled us "Urban Naxals" and refused to accept these demands. Now, sensing the country's mood, they have accepted the proposal in principle. However, there seems to be considerable confusion and dissatisfaction regarding it,' Pilot said. He again urged the Centre to emulate the 'Telangana model' at the national level, claiming that the state had successfully conducted a comprehensive caste survey using NGOs and technical experts instead of overburdened government staff. Pilot also demanded a clear roadmap, sufficient funding, and transparency in the execution of the census. UNI RBE ARN
