Food For Thought: TG govt to issue 2 lakh new ration cards soon
Over 2 lakh new ration cards will be issued during this first phase. The list of eligible beneficiaries has already been finalised after thorough verification of the applications received through MeeSeva centers and the recent Praja Palana program. The number of beneficiaries of ration cards in the state has reached 2.93 crore so far and the number of cards has crossed 90 lakh. About 2.50 lakh applications have been received by authorities for new cards across the state through Prajapalana, Gram Sabhas, Prajavani and Meeseva, besides 8.10 lakh applications for adding the names of existing cards with new family members, informed official sources.
This marks a significant step, as no new ration cards had been issued in the state for several years. Following the formation of the Congress-led government, a cabinet sub-committee was formed to formulate the criteria and procedures for issuing new ration cards. The state government had also invited applications to add family members to existing cards and ensured that all requests were filtered through strict eligibility checks.
In a modernization effort, the government is planning to issue Smart Ration Cards this time. CM Revanth Reddy had earlier announced this move in a public meeting, stating that the cards would feature barcodes for easy access and advanced digital features. The smart cards will resemble ATM cards in size and design.
One side of the card will feature a photograph of CM Revanth Reddy and the Civil Supplies Minister, while the center of the card will display the Telangana government logo. The final design has reportedly been approved and is expected to be unveiled soon.
The card aims to make transactions smoother, reduce fraud, and improve transparency in the Public Distribution System.

Prajapati community gets new identity CM Saini and his cabinet colleagues Wednesday distributed eligibility certificates to the members of Prajapati community across various parts of Haryana. The CM presided over the state-level function in Kurukshetra for distribution of these entitlement certificates to families belonging to Prajapati community. The programme was held simultaneously in all 22 districts and the certificates will benefit around 1,00,000 families with land entitlement certificates. Under the scheme, entitlement certificates have been issued in about 1,700 villages, granting the Prajapati community collective rights for soil excavation. A government spokesperson said, 'These certificates, issued under the Gram Shamlat Bhumi Niyamwali, 1964, not only grant the right to use the land but also provide legal authority to carry out their work without hindrance. This initiative will enable the Prajapati community to give a new direction to their art, help realise their dreams and allow them to manufacture products without having to travel far.' Describing the Prajapati community as hardworking, honest and skilled, Saini said that the art of making earthen pots has been an integral part of our cultural heritage. 'However, over time, this skill has not received the respect and opportunities the community deserves, and the necessary resources to connect the new generation with this art were not provided in time. Earlier, in every village, adequate land was available for the Prajapati community to source soil, but previous governments failed to address this need. During the Congress regime, even the workplaces of the Prajapati community were encroached upon. Not only that, those in power at the time conspired against the community and attempted to take away their livelihood. A superficial promise of allotting 100-square-yard plots in villages was made, but those plots were carved out from the very land where the Prajapati community earned their living. Such policies brought the employment of this community almost to a standstill.'

The Congress, after 11 years, has appointed separate presidents for the urban and rural units of Gurugram on Tuesday, in a strategic move aimed at boosting organisational strength, improving caste representation, and sharpening grassroots outreach ahead of the upcoming elections, said officials familiar with the matter on Wednesday. Vardhan Yadav and Pankaj Dawar (HT Photo) Pankaj Dawar has been named the president for Gurugram urban, while Vardhan Yadav will take charge of Gurugram rural. Both young leaders are known for their aggressive political approach and consistent criticism of the ruling party on issues ranging from civic neglect to unemployment, said officials. To be sure, there were no district presidents and the areas were managed by their headquarters. Party insiders revealed that the decision is part of a larger state-wide reshuffle, with the Haryana Congress announcing 32 new district committee presidents on Tuesday evening. Several of those appointed are close to senior leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Kumari Selja, underscoring the party's attempt to consolidate internal alliances ahead of the polls, said officials. In Gurugram, the restructuring addresses long-standing demands from party workers to split the leadership between rural and urban constituencies to ensure better focus on localised issues. 'For over a decade, a unified structure meant that concerns unique to either the city or the villages often went underrepresented. This division will make way for targeted strategies,' a senior party functionary said. Dawar, who has built his political base in the city's business and trader community, is expected to focus on urban infrastructure, civic amenities, and engaging with the city's growing middle-class voter base. 'The people of Gurugram urban deserve accountable governance, and we will work tirelessly to ensure their issues are addressed,' Dawar said after his appointment. Yadav, a close aide of senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Deepnder Hooda commands strong support in the Ahirwal belt and is known for his connection with farmers and rural youth. 'Our villages have been neglected for far too long. From water scarcity to unemployment, we will take these issues head-on and ensure the Congress's voice is heard loud and clear in rural Gurugram. I have always been connected to roots and will start working from ground level and bring a difference in the issues that are impacting residents,' said Yadav. Political analysts believe the move also reflects the party's effort to balance caste equations in the region, particularly in the Ahirwal area, which holds significant electoral weight. With both leaders under the age of 45, the appointments signal a generational shift in the district leadership, aimed at energising the youth wing and widening the party's appeal. Anil Arya, a Gurugram-based political analyst, said, 'By appointing two separate district presidents, the Congress is clearly trying to balance urban and rural priorities, as well as send a signal to different caste communities that their representation matters. With elections approaching, this move is as much about optics as it is about organisation.' Rahul Gandhi to launch INDIA bloc's ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra' against Bihar SIR on Aug 17
PATNA: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is all set to embark on 'Vote Adhikar Yatra' from Bihar's Rohtas district on August 17 to register a protest against how the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls was being conducted in the state. This comes at a time when the Opposition is ratcheting up its protest against the SIR and casting aspersions on the integrity of elections. AICC general secretary (organisation) and MP KC Venugopal held a meeting with the INDIA bloc leaders at Sasaram in Rohtas district on Wednesday and reviewed preparations for Rahul Gandhi's visit to Bihar. Later, Venugopal wrote on 'X', 'The fight to protect our democracy will take place on the streets! Starting August 17, LOP Rahul Gandhi Ji and the INDIA parties will embark on a massive 'Vote Adhikar Yatra' across Bihar - against the dangerous SIR exercise, and to make the battle against 'Vote Chori' a mass movement! 'In this context, met INDIA bloc leaders in Sasaram today (Wednesday) to assess our preparation, mobilisation and set up smooth coordination for the Yatra.' The Yatra is expected to give a major push to the INDIA bloc's campaign for the upcoming Bihar assembly election. Along with Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, other senior leaders of the INDIA bloc will address joint public meetings during the Yatra. The Yatra is expected to follow the route that Rahul had undertaken during the 'Bharat Jodo Yatra'.
