Civil Protection forces were able to contain a fire that broke out in a residential building in the Safir Square area of Heliopolis.
The Cairo Civil Protection Operations Room received a report of the fire, and fire engines immediately arrived at the scene. A security cordon was established to contain the flames.
Civil Protection forces immediately reinforced the scene with fire trucks and ambulances in anticipation of any casualties and to quickly control the fire before it spread to the residential apartments in the building itself.
The forces were able to control the fire within 60 minutes, containing the flames and preventing them from spreading to the rest of the building. Residents were evacuated, and electricity and gas supplies were cut off as a precaution, in case the flames exploded. Cooling efforts are currently underway to prevent the fire from recurring.
The forensic laboratory was also dispatched to inspect the site of the fire, determine whether there was any criminal suspicion behind the outbreak, and assess the damage to the restaurant and the affected residential apartments.

United Bank contributes EGP 600m to syndicated loan worth EGP 6.2bn for Mountain View project

United Bank has participated with EGP 600m in a syndicated long-term loan worth EGP 6.2bn, arranged by a consortium of six banks led by Banque Misr, to finance part of the Mountain View 1.1 project's EGP 14.4bn investment cost. The facility has a maximum tenor of seven years. CEO Ashraf El Kady said the bank's participation reflects its commitment to supporting the state's development strategy and contributing to sustainable, integrated infrastructure projects that enhance citizens' quality of life. He highlighted the construction sector's vital role in driving economic growth and GDP expansion, noting that bank financing for such projects helps stimulate investment and create jobs. El Kady also stressed the importance of directing investment to promote balanced geographic and demographic development, easing population pressure on the Nile Valley and Delta, while supporting housing supply for various income segments—particularly middle-income and social housing—thereby fostering social stability. Deputy Managing Director for Business Sectors Nevine Kashmiry said United Bank is a major supporter of Egypt's construction sector, given its central role in development. She noted that the country's urban expansion under the 'New Republic' includes the New Administrative Capital and 12 new smart cities such as New Alexandria, New Assiut, New Suez, and New Alamein. Deputy CEO Farag Abdel Hamid described the participation as a reflection of the bank's national role in shaping Egypt's future under Vision 2030, while Deputy CEO Moataz El Kassaby stressed the bank's preference for partnering with developers committed to quality and sustainability standards to maximise economic and social returns. Albir Nasan, Head of Syndicated Loans, said United Bank's involvement in financing real estate projects aligns with its longstanding role in supporting the Egyptian economy and the state's urban development goals under Vision 2030.

Suez Canal Bank net profits surge 71% to EGP 3.1bn in H1 2025

Suez Canal Bank has reported a sharp rise in profitability for the first half of 2025, with net profits reaching EGP 3.1bn in June—up 71% from EGP 1.8bn a year earlier. CEO and Managing Director Akef El Maghraby said the performance was supported by a 52% jump in net interest income to EGP 3.9bn, compared to EGP 2.5bn in June 2024. The bank's total assets grew by 26% to EGP 227bn in June 2025, up from EGP 180bn at the end of 2024. Customer deposits climbed 29% to EGP 175bn from EGP 135bn a year earlier, reflecting stronger client confidence and deposit mobilisation. Net loans and customer facilities increased 23% to EGP 91.8bn, compared to EGP 74.9bn at the end of 2024. Corporate loans accounted for the bulk of the portfolio, rising 22% to EGP 84.8bn from EGP 69.7bn a year earlier. Loan growth was underpinned by financing across a broad range of sectors, including agriculture, contracting, financial services, real estate, and tourism—helping spread risk and broaden the client base. In retail banking, the loan portfolio expanded 36% to EGP 7.2bn, up from EGP 5.3bn at the end of 2024, as the bank continued to strengthen its consumer lending business.

WTO Cuts 2026 Global Trade Growth Forecast to 1.8% Amid Trump Tariffs

Taarek Refaat The World Trade Organization (WTO) has lowered its forecast for global merchandise trade growth in 2026 to 1.8%, down from a previous estimate of 2.5%, citing the impact of higher U.S. tariffs. The WTO said the revised outlook is largely driven by shifts in U.S. import patterns but remains well below the pre-tariff projection of 2.7%. In its latest trade update, the organization warned that recent tariff changes will have a broadly negative effect on the global trade outlook. According to the report, the elevated 'reciprocal tariffs' imposed by the United States on August 7, 2020, are expected to weigh heavily on U.S. imports and reduce exports from its trading partners in the second half of 2025 and throughout 2026. The WTO now expects global merchandise trade to grow by 0.9% in 2025, revising up its April forecast of a 0.2% contraction, which had been issued after Washington announced the tariffs and a temporary 90-day suspension for some of them. The 2026 projection of 1.8% growth is significantly lower than the earlier 2.5% estimate. Business Confidence and Supply Chains WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said that uncertainty over tariffs continues to weigh heavily on business confidence, investment, and supply chains. 'Uncertainty remains one of the most disruptive forces in the global trading environment,' she noted, adding that the world has so far avoided a broader cycle of retaliatory measures that could have severely damaged global trade. The Trump administration has framed the so-called 'reciprocal tariffs' as a response to countries acting contrary to WTO principles. Established three decades ago, the WTO was designed to set global trade rules, promote open markets, and discourage high tariffs and protectionist policies. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer wrote in a New York Times op-ed this week that the U.S. is ushering in 'a new era' in the global trade system. 'The current system under the WTO framework is no longer sustainable,' he argued, adding that the U.S. had secured greater access to foreign markets in just a few months than years of WTO negotiations had achieved. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
