Security beefed up ahead of Independence Day events in Kashmir
In summer capital, the full dress rehearsal was held at Bakhshi Stadium where the Independence Day function will be held on August 15. 'In all the districts, the full dress rehearsal of the August 15 functions was held. It was held effectively with the participation of all the contingents,' said inspector general of police VK Birdi at Bakshi Stadium.
He said that the forces also reviewed security arrangements for the Independence day functions to be held across the valley. 'In Srinagar, we have the main program in which VVIPs take salute. Keeping that in mind, multi-tier security arrangements have been made which will be provided by a contingent of J&K Police and central arms police force,' Birdi said.
'There will also be spotters on high rise (structures) and also those in muftis(police personnel in plain clothes) so that all the security arrangements are complete,' he said.
Police, CRPF and also other security agencies, in full battle gear, have been deployed on the streets in capital and other district headquarters.
There has been enhanced checking of vehicles and pedestrians to ensure tight arrangements are in place for the upcoming function. CCTVs and drones will ensure an eagle's eye view on the movement of people.
Divisional commissioner Vijay Kumar Bidhuri hoisted the National Flag and took salute at the march past as he inspected the parade at Bakhshi Stadium. 'Security and peace is prerequisite for development. Earlier law and order situation had a negative role (owing to the Pahalgam attack) on development. But now we are moving ahead owing to the sacrifices of security forces,' he said.
Bidhuri said that all the people have an open invitation just like last year on I-day celebrations. 'All are invited. There is no restriction. It is just like a festival. I request everyone to come with their ID cards,' he said.
Army & BSF on high alert
Jammu Ahead of Independence Day celebrations on August 15, the army and the Border Security Force (BSF) have been put on a high alert along the 744 km long LoC and 200 km long Indo-Pak international border.
To catch a glimpse of army's preparedness, media persons were taken to the LoC in Sunderbani on Tuesday.
The visit highlighted the formidable challenges faced by soldiers stationed at the border, who steadfastly defend the nation with determination and selflessness, said a defence spokesperson.
Amid the breathtaking yet unforgiving landscapes, the soldiers displayed an indomitable spirit as they tackled adversities with unwavering commitment and an assuring smile, he added.
Despite extreme weather conditions, isolation and the constant demand for vigilance, these soldiers embody remarkable resilience, he said.
Technological advancements were also on display, such as the smart fence system that enhances border security and surveillance. Newly introduced equipment—including quadcopters, advanced surveillance tools, bulletproof vehicles, all terrain vehicles, modern weapons and night vision eights were also displayed, he said. 'These soldiers exemplify the values of honour, duty and sacrifice that form the bedrock of their service. Their unity and shared purpose in safeguarding the country, serves as an inspiration to all citizens,' he said.
The BSF has also upped its surveillance and border domination drill along the 200 km long Indo-Pak international border and has put almost entire border under technological surveillance including smart fence, said officials.
They informed that the anti-drone systems have also been inducted all along the Jammu border.
The BSF has also intensified boat patrolling in rivers that flow from Jammu region into Pakistan. 'Our border patrols and troops in the mounds besides watch towers are alert and alive to the situation,' they said.

Pawan calls for unity to protect democracy, national integrity
Kakinada: Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan on Thursday called upon citizens to stand united to thwart both external and internal forces seeking to destabilise the nation, thereby safeguarding democracy and national integrity. In his address, Pawan said India's freedom was won through immense sacrifices, and that Independence Day should be celebrated not as a ritual, but with a sense of responsibility to protect the nation. Over the next five years, the scheme will provide three free cylinders annually, costing Rs 13,427 crore. Pawan announced a sharp hike in funds for national festival celebrations in panchayats — from Rs 100 to Rs 10,000 for minor panchayats and from Rs 250 to Rs 25,000 for major panchayats — enhancing the role and dignity of sarpanches. He lauded the state's achievement of holding village assemblies simultaneously in all 13,326 panchayats, advancing the goal of 'village self-rule.' To boost forest cover from 30 per cent to 37 per cent, one crore saplings have been planted and are being tracked through QR codes. He also cited the resolution of elephant attack issues by deploying 'kunki' elephants from Karnataka, and the launch of 61 tourism projects in Araku with a budget of Rs 1,022 crore. On his Pithapuram constituency, he said Rs 308 crore had already been spent on development works to transform it into a model constituency, with more projects planned over the next four years. The event featured police and departmental floats, cultural performances by school students, and the presentation of awards to officials, staff, and volunteers. Pawan also laid the foundation stone for the Rs 6-crore Red Cross Cancer Block at Kakinada Government General Hospital, funded through CSR contributions. TTD to carry out extensive propagation of Sanatana Dharma
Tirupati: The 79th Independence Day was celebrated with grandeur at the Parade Grounds in the TTD Administrative Building here on Friday. TTD chairman B R Naidu, along with executive officer J Syamala Rao, hoisted the national flag and received the guard of honour from the security personnel. In his address, the chairman announced that the TTD will conduct extensive programmes for the propagation of Sanatana Dharma with the participation of the public. He recalled the sacrifices of freedom fighters and expressed confidence that India would soon emerge as the world's third-largest economy. He said, following the directions of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, several new initiatives have been taken up, including implementation of AI technology for faster and more convenient darshan, improved quality and distribution of Annadanam with special counters in crowded areas, and annadanam with milk every three hours at the Vaikuntham Queue Complex. Vada has been introduced at Tarigonda Vengamamba Annadanam Bhavan from March, and a new SRIVANI ticket counter provides same-day evening darshan for tickets issued in the morning. Other measures include modernisation of Kalyanakatta, 110 per cent increase in Tirumala greenery, an anti-drone security system, a new quality-testing lab, phased development of sub-temples, construction of temples in various states and UTs, increased grants for temples in Dalit, tribal, and fisher communities, and strengthening of Srivari Seva with professional and NRI volunteers. EO Syamala Rao, extending I-Day greetings, said efforts are being made to ensure comfortable darshan for pilgrims from across the country and abroad, and lauded officials and staff for their services. Ensure welfare schemes will reach all, CS to officials
Vijayawada: Chief secretary K Vijayanand on Friday said that the state government had set a target to make the state free from single-use plastic by World Environment Day, June 5, 2026. As a first step, the ban has been enforced in the state Secretariat from Friday, and the initiative will be extended in phases to all municipal corporations, towns, and villages. Speaking as the chief guest at the 79th Independence Day celebrations held at the Secretariat, Vijayanand said plastic pollution is a grave threat to the environment and human survival. He stressed the need for collective responsibility to protect natural resources for future generations. Paying tributes to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, the architect of the Constitution Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the designer of the national flag Pingali Venkaiah, revolutionary leader Alluri Sitarama Raju, and all other freedom fighters, the Chief Secretary said Independence Day is an occasion to recall the sacrifices of great leaders who fought for the country's freedom. Highlighting the government's welfare agenda, he said both the Centre and the state are implementing several development and social security schemes aimed at uplifting the poor. He urged officials and employees to work with dedication to ensure that every eligible beneficiary, even in the remotest village, receives the benefits. Vijayanand also spoke about the Swarna Andhra P-4 Foundation launched to eradicate poverty and reduce economic inequalities, and called for committed efforts to make the programme a success. Principal secretary (GAD) Mukesh Kumar Meena, CSO Mallikarjuna, senior police officers, staff, and Secretariat employees attended the programme. As part of the celebrations, Vijayanand paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, unfurled the national flag, and later distributed sweets to children.
