Centre approves repair of 11 govt schools under Samagra Shiksha in DK: MP
The MP sought details regarding reports of damage to over 290 schools due to heavy rains and urgent central assistance to address the same. He also urged for a fast-track mechanism to enable the reconstruction of school infrastructure in disaster-prone areas of coastal Karnataka.
In a reply to his question, the ministry conveyed that 11 govt schools in DK were approved for major repair works under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme (SSS) during 2023–24 and 2024–25, as per the PRABANDH portal.
The ministry of education reiterated that SSS provides flexibility to states to prioritise such interventions and seek central support based on need and urgency. The ministry also issued guidelines and advisories, in coordination with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), to promote disaster-resilient school infrastructure and ensure prompt restoration in affected areas, the MP stated in a release.
"The Centre's approval of repair works under Samagra Shiksha is a welcome step, but this is only a beginning. With over 290 schools damaged, I will continue to press for expanded support and accelerated approval for all affected schools in Dakshina Kannada," Chowta stated.
He also assured to raise the matter with the ministry to ensure that the Centre expands the scope of assistance and expedites repairs for damaged schools across DK.

CPI(M) demands cancellation of bids for privatisation of 44 departments in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant
Demanding the immediate intervention of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan to cancel the bids issued for Expression of Interest (EOI) towards privatisation of 44 departments in the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), representatives of the CPI(M) district committee staged a protest at Jagadamba Junction here on Tuesday. Addressing the protesters, CPI(M) district secretary M. Jaggunaidu recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured that VSP would remain in the public sector while announcing the revival package. He pointed out that the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister too had promised there would be no privatisation, displaced persons would be given justice, and the revival package was showcased as an achievement of the alliance government within its first year in power. However, Mr. Jaggunaidu alleged that the package was intended to mislead workers and the public, while accelerating the privatisation process. At present, he said, VSP engages nearly 600 local private agencies and contractors, who are set to be replaced by around 50 large firms working under the influence of the Centre and the State government. This, he warned, would deprive officials and permanent employees of any say in operations. He further cautioned that the move would result in downsizing of permanent staff and mass termination of contract workers. Outsourced workers from other States would be appointed instead, without rights or job security. The EOI, he alleged, was designed to benefit big contractors and politically influential groups. VSP, which provides employment to nearly one lakh people directly and indirectly and has contributed about ₹54,000 crore to the Centre and State in taxes and dividends, was being handed over to vested interests, he alleged. CPI(M) district secretariat member B. Ganga Rao came down heavily on TDP State president and Gajuwaka MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao, and Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat for not opposing the termination of 5,000 contract workers and 2,000 permanent workers in VSP. He termed it a betrayal of the people who had voted them to power. District leaders R.K.S.V. Kumar, P. Mani, B. Jagan, V. Krishna Rao, B. Eswaramma, Subba Rao, P. Pydiraju and U.S.N. Raju also took part in the protest.

Industries and IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu said BRS leader K.T. Rama Rao finds it convenient to hurl baseless accusations against the Telangana government while maintaining silence on BJP's favouritism for projects set up in Gujarat. Stating that Mr. Rao's criticism of Kaynes Semiconductor project shifting from Hyderabad to Gujarat because of the Telangana government's failure is 'nothing but an outrageous lie', Mr. Sridhar Babu said the truth is the BJP-ruled Centre and Gujarat government showered massive subsidies and lured the project. 'KTR knows this very well, but chooses to deliberately mislead people of Telangana with baseless allegations,' the Minister said in a statement on Tuesday. The Centre approved 50% subsidy under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) for the Kaynes project being set up in Sanand, Gujarat. Once it was publicised that units established in Gujarat would automatically receive a 50% subsidy, semiconductor industries naturally leaned towards that State. For Kaynes' proposed project with an investment of ₹3,307 crore, 'the Centre offered an extraordinary subsidy of ₹1,654.5 crore. On top of that, the Gujarat government extended another 40% of the central subsidy — amounting to ₹661 crore. Altogether, subsidies covered nearly 70% of the project cost, i.e., about ₹2,314.9 crore,' Mr. Sridhar Babu said. Despite ISM's promise of 50% support across India, the Centre has never shown such generosity towards States other than Gujarat, he said, adding the 'step motherly treatment' is something BJP alone must answer for.
