Despite his progress, star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum should not play next season

USA Today08-08-2025
Despite his progress, star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum should not play next season. Or at least that is the point of view of the hosts of the CLNS Media "Celtics Beat" podcast, Adam Kaufman and Evan Valenti, in a conversation with guest Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston on a recent episode of their show.
With the offseason news cycle being as dead as it tends to be in the months of July and August, clips of the St. Louis native walking around with a boot on the foot he injured the Achilles tendon of are getting a fair amount of attention. And with that attention comes hopes for an early return to action for Tatum, which the Celtics Beat hosts are vehemently against.
Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say about what the Duke alum ought to sit out until the 2026-27 NBA season.

On the Boston Celtics signing former two way wing Ron Harper Jr. to a training camp deal

The Boston Celtics have signed former two way wing Ron Harper Jr. to a training camp deal. What made the Celtics want to ink the prospect to a deal this summer? Is the plan to have him compete for the team's final open regular roster spot? Could he dislodge one of the trio of players Boston has under contract for their own two way slots in Amari Williams, Max Shulga, or RJ Luis Jr.? Or is the plan to get him back to the Maine Celtics at the G League level, where he previously played within the wider franchise orbit? The folks behind the "Cyro Asseo" YouTube channel put together a clip taking a closer look at the signing and what Boston's front office might be planning for Brewer. Check it out below! Boston Celtics big Neemias Queta gets 12 points, 7 rebounds with Portugal vs. Sweden

Boston Celtics big man Neemias Queta continues to play well for the Portuguese National Team in FIBA EuroBasket exhibition warmups. The Lisbon native put up another solid stat line in a tilt with the Swedish National Team on Saturday (Aug. 16) afternoon, logging 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 block in just 15 minutes of floor time. The Celtics center shot a very efficient 5-of-7 from the field overall, and went 2-of-3 from the free throw line for good measure. Ahead of what is looking like a campaign that will see Queta take on a much bigger role with Boston, this is exactly the sort of thing one wants to see, especially given the fact that he is not all that far removed from offseason knee surgery. The man behind the "Tomasz Kordylewski" YouTube channel put together a clip of his best play from that friendly. Check it out below! Listen to "Havlicek Stole the Pod" on: Spotify: iTunes: YouTube:

Mychal Thompson gives warning about Pat Riley's upcoming Lakers statue

This coming season, the Los Angeles Lakers will honor former coach Pat Riley by unveiling a statue of him just outside of Arena. It will be revealed on Feb. 22, 2026, when the Boston Celtics, who are likely Riley's least favorite team, come to town to play the Lakers. Riley coached the Lakers for nine years, starting in the 1981-82 season. He inherited a roster that had won the 1980 NBA championship, and he turned it from a one-hit wonder into arguably the greatest team in league history. The Purple and Gold won four world titles under Riley's coaching, including two against the Celtics during mid-decade. Mychal Thompson, one of his former players on the Lakers, is glad Riley is finally getting a statue some 35 years after leaving the franchise. But Thompson had one important warning about the potential design of the statue. Recently, the Miami Heat, the team Riley has worked for since 1995, unveiled a statue of Wade. It was widely panned for lacking a strong resemblance to the legendary shooting guard, who won three rings in 16 NBA seasons. Thompson, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1978 draft, was traded to the Lakers midway through the 1986-87 season. The big man's strong inside play on both ends of the floor helped make up for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's decline and allowed the team to win its last two championships of Riley's tenure with it in 1987 and 1988. Today, fans know Thompson as the loquacious and colorful color commentator on the Lakers' radio broadcasts. He works alongside play-by-play man John Ireland.
