Over 5,000 beneficiaries in Delhi receive Ayushman Bharat health insurance cards

The Hindu18-05-2025

Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) West Delhi Lok Sabha member Kamaljeet Sahrawat on Sunday distributed Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) cards to over 5,000 beneficiaries.
AB PM-JAY, the Central government's health insurance scheme, was rolled out in the Capital last month with the first batch of beneficiaries receiving the health cards. The ruling BJP made its implementation in the Capital one of its key promises in the run-up to the Delhi Assembly poll.
Under AB PM-JAY, 6.5 lakh families will receive ₹5 lakh health cover per family for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation, with the Delhi government providing an additional ₹5 lakh cover from its own funds.
Moreover, senior citizens aged 70 and above are entitled to health care coverage of ₹10 lakh under another scheme, Pradhan Mantri Vay Vandana Yojana.
Attacking the previous Aam Aadmi Party government, Mr. Sood said lakhs of Delhiites were 'deprived of quality health care services' as the former government 'deliberately stalled' the Centre's public welfare schemes.
Ms. Singh, who distributed the health cards in Vikaspuri, west Delhi, said illness will no longer be a financial burden on Delhi residents as they can now access medical care at empanelled hospitals not just in the Capital but across the country.
'This scheme guarantees both accessibility and quality of treatment. It is not just a health protection initiative but also a step towards restoring dignity and confidence in every family,' she added.

Sec 48 hosp to get Ayushman payment kiosk

1 2 Chandigarh: In a move aimed at enhancing patient convenience, the department of radiotherapy at Sector 48 hospital is set to launch an Ayushman Bharat payment kiosk from Thursday onwards. This crucial facility, previously located at GMCH-32, will now directly serve cancer patients at the Sector 48 campus, eliminating the arduous commute between the two hospitals for financial aid. The relocation comes as a welcome relief for numerous cancer patients, many of whom are covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Previously, despite their OPD and day-care services, including chemotherapy, being shifted to Sector 48 in April, patients were still required to travel to GMCH-32 solely to access their Ayushman benefits and collect medicines. This logistical challenge often added to the already considerable physical and emotional burden of undergoing cancer treatment. Prof G P Thami, medical superintendent of GMCH, said, "We initiated services at the south campus some time back, and due to initial low footfall, the Ayushman counter was not immediately operational here. However, with the expansion of services from June 12 onwards, the counter will now be fully functional within this campus for these patients." A faculty member said, "The OPD and day care were specifically shifted from GMCH so that patients could receive chemotherapy and consult doctors for follow-ups in the same campus. But having to travel to GMCH-32 for financial aid made no sense." Following a surprise visit by Panjab governor and UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria last year, who called for enhanced patient care, it was decided to utilise the Sector 48 hospital as an extension of GMCH. "We are also procuring 30 additional POS machines and plan to have them installed in the sample collection area as well so that patients need not make another queue for fee payment," said the medical superintendent. 3.45 lakh cards issued under PM-JAY, 1.67 lakh under Vay Vandana Yojana: Delhi Health Minister

Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh on Wednesday said that till date, over 3.45 lakh cards have been issued under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), and 1.67 lakh cards have been issued under the Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojana since both the schemes were rolled out in April. 'The prompt issuance of over 3.45 lakh cards is a testament to the Delhi Government's efficient implementation and the people's trust in our healthcare initiatives. We are committed to upholding the dignity and well-being of every senior citizen in the capital,' Mr. Singh said. In Delhi, PM-JAY provides beneficiaries with health insurance up to ₹10 lakh per family. Under the Vay Vandana Yojana, 1,24,215 beneficiaries registered for the card themselves, while 11,284 were registered with the help of Beneficiary Identification System (BIS) operators, and 42,176 through government-run Common Service Centres (CSCs), officials said. The Vay Vandana Yojana allows senior citizens over 70 years of age to receive free medical treatment in Delhi up to ₹10 lakh. Meanwhile, the Health Minister also added that over 30 new Urban-Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (U-AAMs) will be ready by the end of this month. 'This very month, over 30 new Ayushman Arogya Mandirs will be dedicated to the people of Delhi. The aim is to ensure that every Assembly constituency has multiple such centres equipped with medical staff, diagnostic tools, and essential medicines to provide free, reliable, and prompt care,' he said.
