Makkal Selvan Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen have returned to the silver screen with their romantic family drama, Thalaivan Thalaivii, which is officially released in theatres today, July 25. Directed by Pandiraj and produced by Sathya Jyothi Films, the film had already sparked major excitement thanks to its vibrant promotional campaign and the beloved pairing of its leads.
The story blends themes of love, familial bonding and comedy, offering an emotionally rich and entertaining experience. Audiences have already begun responding positively, with social media flooded with praise for the film's feel-good narrative, relatable characters and warm performances. Although the film was initially announced to have a Telugu version titled Sir Madam, its release status remains unclear. While the Tamil version opened in theatres as planned, tickets for Sir Madam are yet to be listed in Telugu-speaking regions. So far, there has been no official confirmation from the makers about whether the Telugu version will see a delayed theatrical release or skip theatres in favour of a direct OTT premiere. Industry insiders speculate that the team may have chosen to avoid a box-office clash with the big-budget Telugu film Hari Hara Veera Mallu.

Vijay Sethupathi had earlier unveiled the teaser on May 4 via his Instagram handle, captioning it: 'Presenting the #ThalaivanThalaivii Title Teaser — a glimpse into a love story that's equal parts chaos and charm. Watch, feel, repeat. #VJS52."
What makes Thalaivan Thalaivii particularly appealing is its effortless balance between humour and heartfelt emotion. The title, which translates to 'Leader (Male) and Leader (Female)," suggests an equal partnership between the protagonists, both in love and in life. This concept is reflected in the film's tone and structure, offering a fresh yet rooted narrative that celebrates companionship, mutual respect and the beauty of everyday relationships.
Vijay Sethupathi has an exciting lineup of films beyond Thalaivan Thalaivii. Up next is Gandhi Talks, an experimental silent comedy-drama written and directed by Kishor Pandurang Belekar. The film co-stars Aditi Rao Hydari, Arvind Swamy, Mahesh Manjrekar and others and has already made history as the first Indian silent film to be screened at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

Hari Hara Veera Mallu pulled off a mild surprise over the weekend, as the film managed to pick up some collections in Andhra Pradesh. The Pawan Kalyan starrer grossed approximately Rs. 83.50 crore in India over its four-day opening weekend. Overseas, the film added another USD 1.60 million (Rs. 13.50 crore), pushing its worldwide total to Rs. 97 crore. After crashing nearly 80 per cent on Friday, the expectation was for Hari Hara Veera Mallu to continue free-falling. However, the film showed signs of stability on Saturday and then pulled off a surprising 60 per cent growth on Sunday in Andhra Pradesh. Even Telangana and Karnataka contributed decently, when they too could have completely collapsed. Of course, the weekend pickings don't change anything; the film was left for dead on Friday, but it managed to claw back some ground. It will now go over Rs. 100 crore worldwide in a day or two, which seemed far-fetched two days ago. At this pace, Saiyaara could soon surpass the lifetime collection of Kabir Singh (Rs 377 crore) — which would make it the highest-grossing Indian romantic film of all time (non-inflation-adjusted).
