‘Why is every citizen in debt of Rs 4.8 lakh in ‘Modi Raj'?': Congress accuses Centre of catering to capitalist friends

A sharp rise in individual debt levels has sparked political fire, with the Congress lashing out at the Centre after a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) report revealed that the per capita debt of borrowers has soared over the past two years.
According to the RBI, the average debt per borrower jumped from Rs 3.9 lakh in March 2023 to Rs 4.8 lakh in March 2024, a spike largely driven by higher-rated borrowers.
Taking aim at the government's economic policies, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh blamed the BJP-led NDA government for pushing ordinary citizens into debt while favouring corporates. 'Why is every citizen of the country in debt of Rs 4,80,000?' he asked in a post on X in Hindi.
Attacking what he called the government's pro-corporate tilt, Ramesh alleged: 'Debt of 'Achhe Din'! The Modi government has ruined the country's economy in the last eleven years. No effort was made to improve the lives of the people, all the policies were made only for the capitalist friends, the losses of which are being suffered by the people of the country today.'
Continuing the Opposition's criticism of unemployment and inflation, he added: 'Youth are unemployed. Farmers are dying by suicide. People are troubled by inflation. Constitutional institutions are being crushed. People are drowning in debt and Modi ji's best friends are making profits, their wealth is increasing.'
Ramesh also cited data to highlight the nature of the debt burden. 'In 2 years, the per capita debt has increased by Rs 90,000 to Rs 4.8 lakh,' he said.
Calling it 'deeply worrying,' Ramesh, 71, noted that unsecured loans have crossed 25 per cent and external debt stood at $736.3 billion by March 2025 – a 10 per cent rise over the previous year.
Accusing the Centre of attempting to 'hide the real shortcomings by taking the help of statistics and experts', Ramesh said no one can 'deny the truth' that the debt burden on the country is at its peak in 'Modi Raj'.

E-commerce firm Meesho files confidentially for Rs 4,250 crore India IPO

E-commerce platform Meesho has confidentially filed for a Rs 4,250 crore IPO with market regulator the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), joining a wave of startups rushing to go public this year, according to people familiar with the matter. The Bengaluru-based company is targeting a market debut in September or October. The move comes as Meesho has emerged as India's third-largest e-commerce platform, reaching a gross merchandise value run rate of $6.2 billion for FY 2025. The company reported a 33 per cent increase in revenue to Rs 7,615 crore for fiscal 2024, while narrowing its net loss to Rs 53 crore from Rs 1,569 crore the previous year. Meesho's rapid ascent has disrupted the established duopoly of Flipkart and Amazon. Over the past four years, the company has increased its market share from low single digits to 8.9 per cent as of 2024. In contrast, Flipkart's share slipped from 33.7 per cent in 2020 to 32.1 per cent, while Amazon declined from 30.5 per cent to 28.3 per cent over the same period, according to a CLSA report. The IPO filing positions Meesho ahead of many other startups in India's public market rush. Fintech firm Pine Labs filed its draft prospectus with the market regulator last week, while furniture retailer Wakefit and cloud kitchen operator Curefoods submitted pre-IPO documents recently, signalling renewed momentum among consumer-facing startups. The company received shareholder approval last week to proceed with its initial public offering and to designate co-founder and chief executive Vidit Aatrey as chairman and managing director, according to sources. Till March 2024, Meesho was valued at about $3.9 billion, according to data platform Tracxn. A recent CLSA report projects the company will grow at a 26 per cent compound annual growth rate through FY 2031, as Meesho's gains come at the expense of incumbent players. Meesho did not respond to requests for comment on the company's IPO plans. The company, which counts Fidelity Investments, SoftBank Group, Prosus, and Peak XV Partners among its backers, joins other startups using the confidential filing route. A confidential pre-IPO filing allows companies to submit offering documents without immediate public disclosure, giving them time to address regulatory feedback while keeping financial details shielded from competitors. Online brokerage Groww, education platform PhysicsWallah, logistics firm Shadowfax Technologies, and industrial steam solutions provider Steamhouse India have recently filed for IPOs through the confidential route. Shadowfax Technologies, backed by Flipkart, is expected to raise between Rs 2,000 crore and Rs 2,500 crore, potentially valuing the company at around Rs 8,500 crore. Surat-based Steamhouse India is estimated to seek between Rs 500 crore and Rs 700 crore. The IPO filing follows Meesho's completion of a crucial corporate restructuring. In June, the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved Meesho's plan to relocate its headquarters from Delaware to India. The company is reportedly expected to pay approximately $288 million in taxes related to the so-called reverse flip. "This filing is part of our ongoing transition to re-domicile in India. With the majority of our operations, including customers, sellers, creators and Valmo partners already based here, this step aligns our corporate structure with our day-to-day business footprint," a Meesho spokesperson had said at the time. India's e-commerce market is currently dominated by four players: Flipkart, Amazon, Meesho, and Myntra, with Meesho's rapid market share gains positioning it as a formidable challenger to the established leaders.

Chennai emerging new salary hotspot for freshers: Report

New Delhi: Chennai is becoming the new salary hotspot for freshers, according to a report that showed a significant shift in India's salary landscape and emerging cities outperforming legacy economic hubs. The report, based on job portal Indeed's inaugural PayMap Survey on responses from 1,311 employers and 2,531 employees, aimed to understand evolving salary benchmarks, sectoral trends, and worker sentiment in a post-pandemic economy. It showed that cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad are emerging as new hotspots for career-driven compensation growth. Chennai leads the entry-level salary chart, with freshers (0-2 years) earning Rs 30,100 per month across sectors. Hyderabad, on the other hand, offers the highest mid or senior-level salaries, with professionals earning up to Rs 69,700 per month at the five-eight years of experience mark., the report said. It noted that although employees across the country have seen an average salary increase of nearly 15 per cent in the past year, the most promising growth stories are playing out beyond the traditional economic centres. 'The salary dynamics are shifting, and employees are increasingly prioritising cities where compensation aligns with both cost of living and career potential. Our data shows that growth is no longer confined to just the biggest metros, opportunity is becoming more distributed,' said Sashi Kumar, Head of Sales at Indeed India. The survey also indicates that 69 per cent of employees feel their income doesn't keep pace with the cost of living in their city. This disparity is most pronounced in high-expense metros such as Delhi (96 per cent), Mumbai (95 per cent), Pune (94 per cent), and Bangalore (93 per cent). Meanwhile, cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata are perceived as more affordable, offering relatively better financial breathing room. At a sector level, IT/ITeS continues to dominate the salary landscape across all experience levels, driven by the ongoing demand for digital and AI-led roles. Freshers across job roles, varying from Software Development to HR engineers, earn an average salary between Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,500, the report said.
