Netflix's Pride and Prejudice casts its Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy

Independent11-04-2025

The casting has been announced for a new six-part adaptation of Pride and Prejudice – and Jane Austen fans approve of the choices.
The Netflix series, written by Everything I Know About Love author Dolly Alderton, will star Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennett and Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy. Meanwhile, Olivia Colman will play Lizzie's mother, Mrs Bennett.
Corrin will also make their debut as an executive producer on the project alongside Alderton and director Euros Lyn, best known for his work on shows including Doctor Who and Heartstopper.
'Playing Elizabeth Bennet is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,' Corrin, who uses they/them pronouns, said in a statement to Deadline.
'To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly's phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honour. I can't wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again.'
Alderton said: 'Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it. Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy – it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life.
'With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favourite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr Darcy.'
Fan responses to the new adaptation so far have been mixed, although many praised the 'impeccable' Corrin and noted that they have a strong background in period dramas, including Lady Chatterley's Lover, and the horror film Nosferatu, set in the 1800s.
Corrin also starred opposite Colman in Netflix's The Crown as Princess Diana to Colman's Queen Elizabeth II.
Colman, too has plenty of experience in period dramas, from her Oscar-winning turn in The Favourite to Miss Havisham in the BBC series Great Expectations.
Scottish actor Lowden, meanwhile, won an Oliver Award for his performance as Oswald in Richard Eyre's 2013 adaptation of Ibsen's Ghosts, and also had a lead role in the BBC's 2016 adaptation of War & Peace. He received rave reviews for his portrayal of the poet Siegried Sassoon in the 2021 film Benediction.
Austen' s 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice has been the subject of TV and film adaptations and spin-offs for almost a century, the first appearing on television in 1938.
Arguably the two most popular are the 1995 BBC series starring Colin Firth as Mr Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennett, and the 2005 film starring Keira Knightly and Matthew Macfadyen.
Netflix adapted Austen's novel Persuasion in 2022, starring Dakota Johnson; the film received negative reviews.
'I don't trust Netflix with any adaptation but I have faith in Emma [Corrin] and Olivia [Colman] so we shall see,' one Austen fan wrote on X/Twitter.
'Jack Lowden in Benediction is sort of an all time great performance, so I'll hold off on passing judgement here,' another person said. 'Could have the range.'
Others despaired over Netflix's involvement, with one sceptic commenting: 'Good cast but is yet another Pride & Prejudice adaptation really where we need to be putting our focus rn? NO.'
'Do we really need another Pride and Prejudice adaptation?' another remarked.
One happy fan said the 1995 series was superior but said Colman was the 'perfect choice' to play Mrs Bennett.
Alderton's Pride and Prejudice will go into production in the UK later this year.

Disney+ drops to £1.99 in rare deal Netflix and Amazon can't beat

Disney Plus has brought back a mega monthly deal that shaves 60% off its usual price and makes it the cheapest streamer compared to Netflix, Prime Video and Apple TV+ Disney+ is offering a subscription for £1.99 with the return of a hugely popular streaming deal. The streamer from the House of Mouse has just kicked off a 'limited-time promotion' that saves 60% compared to the usual price. It allows both new and returning customers to subscribe to Disney+ Standard with Ads for £1.99 per month for four months. This would usually cost a total of £19.96 but is now up for grabs for £7.96 – a £12 discount. However, the deal won't be around for long and is due to expire on June 30. After the four-month promotional period, Disney+ Standard with Ads will automatically renew at the then-current monthly retail price until cancelled. The deal makes Disney+ the most affordable major streamer compared to the cheapest subscription tiers of Netflix (£5.99), Amazon's Prime Video (£5.99) and Apple TV+ (£8.99). It comes ahead of a packed summer slate of new and returning films and series, led by Disney blockbuster Snow White, streaming now. Also on the way this summer are Marvel's Ironheart (June 25), season four of The Bear (June 26) and new prequel series Alien: Earth (August 13). They're set to join an ever-growing library featuring recent hits and critically acclaimed series, Andor, Welcome to Wrexham, Rivals, Only Murders in the Building and Shōgun. The £1.99 deal also provides access to the Stolen Girl, Good American Family and season two of the beloved reality series, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. For those put off by the prospect of adverts interrupting their viewing, the Disney+ plan plays on average less than four minutes of ads per hour of TV, which is less than on terrestrial TV. What's more, adverts will only play before a film starts and not during. Aside from the deal, Disney+ also offers the equivalent of two months free to those paying for a year upfront on the Standard or Premium plan. Opting for an annual plan provides 12 months access for the price of 10 and saves up to £25.98, as well as higher video quality up to 4K UHD and HDR and the ability to stream on four devices simultaneously. Of the many positive reviews left by Disney+ members on Trustpilot, one says: 'Offering a fantastic and constantly updated collection.' Another says: 'I love Disney+. I'm a Star Wars and Marvel fan but since the addition of Starz it boosted my love, there's even more content for adults now that's worth it all round. However, the same user added: 'Only reason it didn't get five stars is Disney are not using their other brands in the subscription. If they did this could easily be the best subscription service ever but there is much more content locked behind their own service.' However, another five-star review says: 'Good servers, good services, this nostalgia when watching old cartoons from TV. The subscription is really cheap compared to other streaming services.'

Huw Edwards slashes price of his £4.75million family home AGAIN and his 'divorce has been delayed'

Disgraced ex- BBC presenter Huw Edwards has reportedly been forced to delay his divorce and cannot find a buyer for his £4.75million mansion. The six-bedroom detached property in Dulwich, south London, was put on the market last October after wife Vicky Flind filed for divorce from the former TV front man. The twisted newsreader and his wife first bought the sprawling home for £1.85million in 2006, 13 years after they tied the knot. But after he pleaded guilty to making indecent images of children last July, it was reported that Ms Flind, who is the mother of Edwards' five children, split from her husband and kicked him out of the home. It is understood the mortgage on the property has been fully paid off, meaning a sale will give him a bumper pay-day of around £2million now he is without his £475,000 salary. However, the sale appears to proving more difficult than first expected due to fears the home has been blighted by Edwards' reputation, according to The Sun. There is such little interest in the house that prospective buyers are being told by property website Zoopla that they would be 'one of the first' to view the 'hidden gem', nine months after it was first listed for sale. And they have even slashed the asking price by a whopping £750,000. The six-bedroom detached property in Dulwich, south London, was put on the market last October after Edwards' wife filed for divorce Estate agents in February were willing to accept £4.5million for the property, but dwindling interest has seen this cut to £4million. In an attempt to drum up interest in the south London home, they described it as being situated 'on one of Dulwich's most desirable residential roads'. They say the house, which is kitted out with three bathrooms and three reception rooms across its 4200 sq ft, is 'a substantial detached mid-century family house' with 'exceptionally spacious living accommodation'. An extract from the listing reads: 'The ground floor has a spacious reception hall, three reception rooms, recently re-fitted kitchen/dining room, office/library, cloakroom, utility room and downstairs WC. 'On the first floor there are four double bedrooms, one with en-suite bathroom and separate dressing room and a family bathroom. 'The second floor has two double bedrooms and a bathroom. Externally to the rear there is a most delightful, mature garden.' The Sun also reported that no decree absolute had been provided to end Edwards' 32-year marriage to Ms Find as of June 5. They say it is unclear whether problems with the sale were a factor in the divorce, which was expected to have been finalised earlier this year.
