Mumbai Metro 3 services from BKC to Worli begin
Earlier, Mumbai Metro Line 3, also known as Aqua Line, was only operational in the suburban stretch between JVLR Aarey and BKC, which was thrown open last year.
Mumbai Metro line-1 (Ghatkopar-Andheri-Versova), Metro Line 2A (Dahisar East-Andheri West ) and Metro Line 7 (Andheri East-Dahisar East) are operational in suburban areas.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday (May 9, 2025) flagged off the phase 2A stretch between BKC and Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli and announced that the final phase of the Metro Line 3 between Worli and Cuffe Parade in south Mumbai will become operational in August.
A spokesperson of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRC) said the operations began at 6.30 a.m., and the first train departed from Worli Naka station, while another train departed from JVLR Aarey at the same time.
He said the services will be operational from 6.30 am to 10.30 pm, except on Sunday, when trains will run from 8.30 a.m. to 10.30 p.m.
One of the passengers who travelled in the morning from Shitaladevi station to Siddhivinayak Temple station posted on social media that there were hardly any commuters, as most people were unaware of extended operations.
Phase 2A is 9.77 km long, and its tunnel has been built through the 'rockbed' underneath the Mithi River, officials said.
It has six stations, including Dharavi, Shitaladevi, Dadar West, Siddhivinayak, Worli, and Acharya Atre Chowk.
The underground corridor will provide metro connectivity to offices in the Worli, Lower Parel, and Prabhadevi areas from BKC, the biggest business hub in the city.
It will also ease the commute to Siddhivinayak and Shitaladevi temples, Mahim Dargah, and recreational places such as Shivaji Park and Ravindra Natya Mandir.
As per the MMRC, the minimum fare will be ₹10, and the maximum fare will be ₹40 for the journey in phase 2A of the underground corridor.
For the travel between JVRL Aarey and Acharya Atre Chowk, passengers will have to shell out ₹60.
MMRC has planned 244 services on the corridor with eight Metro trains, and the travel time between BKC and Acharya Atre Chowk will be 15-20 minutes, while that between JVRL Aarey and Acharya Atre Chowk will be 36 minutes.
The headway between two trains will be 6 minutes and 20 seconds.

Mumbai to get 238 new AC locals with creature comforts
MUMBAI: Cushioned seats, chillier coaches, mobile charging points and a quicker ride – commuting on Mumbai's local trains will feel a lot like travelling on the metro. Once tenders are invited, it will take three to six months to appoint a private contractor to manufacture the new AC locals. While inaugurating a series of infrastructure projects of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), on Thursday, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis drew a parallel between the new AC locals and metro coaches. 'Existing coaches will be replaced by AC coaches, with closed doors similar to the metro rail. I have requested the railway minister (Ashwini Vaishnaw) not to hike ticket fares while introducing these new AC local trains,' said Fadnavis, during the event held at Bandra Kurla Complex. Railway officials said the new AC local trains, to be procured under MUTP-3 and 3A at a cost of ₹19,293 crore, will be vestibuled. This is in sharp contrast to the existing 12-car AC locals, which are divided into six-vestibule coaches. Each new train will be one single vestibule of 12 coaches. 'The tender will be for 2,856 AC coaches, which will constitute 12-car suburban trains. We will be floating tenders for these AC local trains very soon,' said Vilas Wadekar, chairperson and managing director, Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC). This will also offer scope to expand into 15-car AC locals, which cannot be done easily now as the trains are divided into six-vestibule coaches. The air-conditioned vendor compartments will be positioned at both ends of the new trains. The new AC trains are likely to be fitted with cushioned seats instead of the existing steel ones. Commuters have complained that the air-conditioning makes the steel seats uncomfortably cold. The coaches will also be equipped with mobile charging points next to every seat, similar to the set-up in metro trains. Another big plus – they will also be fitted with infotainment sets. The electric powering of the new AC locals will be increased from 33% at present, to 50%. Rail officials said this will result in quicker acceleration and deceleration. The quicker speed will compensate for the 15-20 seconds lost waiting for the doors to open and close at railway stations. 'For the first time, an EMU (local train) will have a speed potential of 130 kmph, which we plan to introduce through these new AC local trains. At present, these trains have a potential to run at 100-110 kmph. This will help on the Fast corridor,' said a railway official. Two EMU car sheds will be built for the 238 new AC locals, one at Bhivpuri on the Central Railway and the other at Vangaon on the Western Railway. They will be solely operated by the private manufacturer. Once tenders are invited, it will take three to six months to appoint a private contractor to manufacture these AC locals. It would take 2 years to manufacture a prototype, followed by various formalities before the AC coaches are manufactured.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday virtually inaugurated a 5.25-km promenade and four pedestrian underpasses on the Mumbai Coastal Road, promising the city not just faster travel but a front-row seat to the Arabian Sea. From Thursday, August 15, Mumbaikars can stroll, jog or cycle along a stretch that is more than twice the length of Marine Drive. The walkway runs from Priyadarshini Park to Worli, with broad footpaths, landscaped gardens, flowering plants, cycle tracks, and wheelchair-friendly ramps. Benches placed at intervals invite visitors to pause and soak in sweeping sea views, while the underpasses at Bhulabhai Desai Road, Haji Ali Junction, near Worli Dairy, and Bindumadhav Thackeray Chowk make access safe and convenient. "This promenade will redefine the way Mumbai connects with its coastline," Mr Fadnavis said during the launch from MMRDA's new Bandra (East) headquarters. He urged motorists to obey speed limits when the Coastal Road opens for 24-hour vehicular movement from midnight on Independence Day, warning that CCTV cameras would catch and penalise violators. Deputy CM Eknath Shinde called the project part of Mumbai's "urban makeover", pointing to ongoing beautification and a planned 70-hectare park along the road. Built on reclaimed land and designed to withstand rough monsoon tides, the promenade is both a public leisure space and a coastal protection measure. For residents, it means a new destination to walk, cycle, and unwind.
