Kathy Swarts Defends ‘Golden Bachelor' Mel Owens

Cosmopolitan17-07-2025
Bachelor Nation is no stranger to controversial casting. And the franchise's Golden Bachelor spinoff is no exception. Last month, Golden Bachelor season 2 lead Mel Owens came under fire for saying that he wouldn't date any women over 60—despite being 66 years old himself—causing many to doubt his future on the show. One person who's not convinced it should cost him the lead spot, however, is speaking out. Golden Bachelor alum Kathy Swarts is defending Mel, saying in a recent interview that she thinks he's in it for the right reasons.
Kathy, who can currently be seen frolicking poolside on Bachelor in Paradise, isn't taking Mel's comments too seriously. 'I think that if Mel Owens met me—and I'm over 70—that line would just not even be in his mouth,' she told Entertainment Weekly. 'It'd be like, 'Whoa, I never knew someone could be this fabulous over 60, over 70.''
She continued, 'I think Mel is a guy looking for love and I think he said something without really thinking about it. I don't think he meant it.'
Despite reports that Mel had been fired from Golden Bachelor, no official announcements have been made, so for now, he remains the lead. And while many in Bachelor Nation might not be inclined to tune in to support a man so blatantly ageist, Kathy said she'll be watching. 'I think it's going to be a great season,' she said. 'I personally can't wait—unless I swoop in and take him away. In which case, show over!'
In case you forgot, during a June 4 appearance on the In the Trenches with Jon Jansen podcast, Mel said that he specifically told producers that he preferred women aged 45 to 60, adding, 'I said, 'If they're 60 or over, I'm cutting them.'' According to him, producers pushed back, appeasing him with, 'They're gonna be hot, don't worry about it.'
His other non-negotiables? He expects the contestants on his Golden Bachelor season to 'be fit' and says he told producers, 'Try and stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs.' How charming.

Stephen Colbert lands new late-night hosting gig on CBS — in 'Elsbeth' season 3

When one door closes, a guest spot opens. Stephen Colbert's days on CBS's The Late Show may be numbered, but the comedian is already exploring some new ventures, including a role on CBS's Elsbeth — as a late-night host. Entertainment Weekly has learned that Colbert is set to guest-star in a season 3 episode of the murder mystery series. Colbert's character will host the fictional show, Way Late with Scotty Bristol, according to Vulture, which first reported the news. Representatives for Colbert did not immediately respond to EW's inquiries, while a rep for CBS declined to comment. The timing of Colbert's newest CBS collab is certainly auspicious. Late last month, the network announced that The Late Show With Stephen Colbert would conclude next year, ending the franchise — which began with David Letterman in 1993 — after 33 years on the air. EW has learned that plans for Colbert's appearance on Elsbeth were set in motion months before that announcement. Back in February, Colbert welcomed Elsbeth star Wendell Pierce to The Late Show and, during their conversation, said that he's been dying to appear on a procedural like Elsbeth. "I want to be the body that's found behind the pile of lettuce boxes or something like that," he joked. Pierce immediately offered to help out: "I can make that happen,' he quipped. "I know a guy who knows a guy. We can get you on." Whether Colbert will be a murderer, an ally, or a produce-stashed corpse remains to be seen, but it seems Pierce delivered on his promise to make a few calls. A spinoff of The Good Wife and The Good Fight, Elsbeth follows the astute but unconventional attorney Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston) as she uses her unique observations to solve a new murder each week. As a guest star, Colbert is in esteemed company; the series has also welcomed Nathan Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Laurie Metcalf, Mary-Louise Parker, Laura Benanti, Matthew Broderick, and more. With the new season set to arrive in October, the comedian will remain busy hosting his actual late-night show until announcing the end of The Late Show, CBS said its decision to pull the plug on the franchise was "purely a financial one" and that it wasn't "related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount." But many critics have questioned the timing of the announcement, pointing out that Colbert had recently criticized CBS' corporate parent, Paramount Global, for agreeing to pay $16 million to President Donald Trump over an interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris that aired on 60 Minutes in November. Trump has long disliked late-night hosts' jokes about his administration and celebrated news of The Late Show's cancellation on social media, writing that Colbert's "talent was even less than his ratings. For his part, Colbert has not backed down, continuing to openly criticize Trump and his administration throughout the president's second term. Reacting to Trump's post about his cancellation, Colbert said, "How dare you sir. Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism: Go f--- yourself." The Golden Bachelor's Mel Owens Offers Mea Culpa for ‘Insensitive' Comments About Older Women: ‘I've Learned a Lot'

The new star of The Golden Bachelor was a little tarnished by recent comments he made about dating older women, but he's trying to make amends. In a new interview with Glamour, Mel Owens — who is set to star in the second season of ABC's senior dating competition — confronts the backlash he received when he said in a podcast interview in June that he'd eliminate any contestants age 60 or older. (Owens is 66, for the record.) More from TVLine Matt Damon and Ken Jennings Risk It All on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire - But Did They Win Big? ABC Moves Up Premiere Date for 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Nashville and Grey's Anatomy Joshua Jackson Admits He's 'Bummed Out' by Doctor Odyssey Cancellation: 'It Was a Really Fun Show' Owens is now backtracking on those comments, saying they 'were a mistake by me. It's unfair. It's insensitive… and I want to earn it back.' Owens is currently two weeks into shooting his season of The Golden Bachelor, and he reveals he apologized to the women as well: 'When I first walked in, I addressed it. I apologized to them. I said, 'It was unfair, insensitive. I want to earn it back. Just give me the chance.'' The women on Owens' season are in their 60s, he says, and he was 'absolutely shocked' at how 'active' and 'brilliant' they are. (ABC has not yet revealed the women competing in Mel's season.) They also got a little revenge on him, he hints: 'One of the dates was a roast. It was brutal. They were killing me… It was good because I earned that, and I took it and I deserved it, and it landed squarely on me.' Owens blames his controversial comments on his lack of familiarity with the show: 'I didn't know the age range because I wasn't watching it. I'm thinking, to me, the age range was 45 to 60. That's my age range. I'm thinking that's the gold years for me.' He also says he preferred younger women because 'my reference… was when I was dating at 39, 40. I hadn't dated in 26 years, so I had no clue.' He hopes fans who wrote off the show after his comments will give it another chance: 'Hopefully the show will show that the women that are in their golden years, that are doing these amazing things. It's inspirational.' The experience so far has been 'life-altering' for him, he adds: 'I've learned a lot.' Owens' season of The Golden Bachelor premieres Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 8/7c on ABC. 'Golden Bachelor' star Mel Owens does damage control after controversial age preference comments

Mel Owens, the new face of "The Golden Bachelor," is doing damage control. The former NFL linebacker turned reality star found himself in hot water after he revealed he asked the people behind the reality show to present him with female contestants between the ages of 45 and 60. After his comment sparked backlash, Owens, 66, addressed the controversy surrounding his remarks about dating preferences. When asked why he made the comments, Owens replied in an interview with Glamour, "Because I didn't know anything about The Golden Bachelor ages. I didn't." He explained, "I had watched the first show when I was younger, when it first launched or something in 2002, until my son was born. But then when he was born, I didn't watch it anymore. So when these people talk about, 'Hey, this season and that season,' I didn't know the age range because I wasn't watching it." Instead, Owens said his idea of the "golden" years was based on his personal frame of reference — not the show's legacy. "I'm thinking, to me, the age range was 45 to 60. That's my age range. I'm thinking that's the gold years for me. My reference, again, was when I was dating at 39, 40. I hadn't dated in 26 years, so I had no clue. And that's why I said that comment," he admitted. "I didn't know. I didn't know. And I didn't know that [Gerry Turner, the original Golden Bachelor] got married and then divorced. I didn't know any of it." Owens, who's currently filming the upcoming season set to premiere in September, said he faced the issue head-on the moment cameras rolled. "When I first walked in, I addressed it. I apologized to them. I said, 'It was unfair, insensitive. I want to earn it back. Just give me the chance,'" he continued to explain. "And hopefully, these last two weeks I earned some of that back." However, not everyone was quick to forgive — especially during one particular group date. "One of the dates was a roast. It was brutal. They were killing me," Owens confessed. "They're brilliant. It's shocking how brilliant they are." Reps for Owens did not immediately respond back to Fox News Digital's request for comment. The drama comes after Owens faced criticism for opening up about his strict criteria when it came to choosing a life partner. While speaking on the "In the Trenches" podcast, Owens didn't hold back, sharing that he had no interest in dating women "60 and over" and made it clear to producers he didn't want anyone cast with "artificial hips" or "wigs." "It's blind up until they get out of the limo. But they asked me, 'What's your preferences?' So, I just said 45 to 60, just being honest," Owens said. "And then the process went, and I was selected, right? And then we had lunch with the executive producer. I said, 'You know, if they're 60 or over, I'm cutting them.' 'Oh Mel, you can't, you know, this is not the 'Silver Bachelor.' It's the 'Golden Bachelor.' He goes, 'but they're going to be hot, don't worry about it. Don't worry about it.'" Owens added that he expected the contestants to all be in good shape. "I had no resume, but they asked me, what is my, like, my profile?" Owens said. "Well, they got to be fit because I stay in shape, should work out and stuff. And I told them, you know, try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs, you know, that kind of stuff, right." In a press release for the show, producers revealed that Owens was previously married for 25 years and is a proud father of two sons. He hopes to find a love "rooted in the simple joys of companionship — sharing life's everyday moments, making plans for the future and growing stronger together as a couple."
