Controversial Hollyoaks scene that stunned fans breached two Ofcom rules
The broadcasting regulator stepped in to investigate the Channel 4 serial after product placement was used during an episode in February.
A direct reference to the credit checking company ClearScore – which was previously the show's sponsor – was made by Kieron's character Ste Hay.
In a conversation with his son Lucas (Oscar Curtis), he whipped out his phone and opened the app, exclaiming: 'See this? They've shown me some options based on my financial situation, and it looks like I can get you that laptop for your studies!'
He was then seen to scroll through various features that the company offers, before adding: 'I really want you to make a go of this, Lucas. These guys are going to help me make it happen.'
Product placement is allowed, though the guidelines in Rule 9.10 state that it shouldn't be 'unduly prominent'.
Ofcom also cited Rule 9.9, which states that 'references to placed products, services and trade marks must not be promotional.'
Fans were quick to pick up on the references, with one writing on X: 'The ClearScore product placement on Hollyoaks is insane. Ste was doing the most this week.'
Another added: 'Not ANOTHER ClearScore ad.'
According to the report, Channel 4 has confirmed that the references were made in relation to a deal with the company, which was separate from their overall sponsorship.
The broadcaster also stated that the references were 'editorially justified' within the programme, and that 'part of the sponsorship and product placement agreements, potential integrations into existing storylines were proposed to ClearScore by the programme editorial team, in consultation with the programme compliance team.'
They added: 'ClearScore had no editorial input into the storyline of the programme.'
Their response went on to claim that as Ste was trying to rebuild his life after the death of his husband James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan) and over a year spent in a coma, he was looking for ways to support his family.

Ofcom concluded their report by saying that the scene was a clear 'demonstration' into how to use the app, rather than an off the cuff reference. More Trending
In response to the outcome, a Channel 4 spokesperson said: 'We acknowledge Ofcom's decision and will review its findings carefully.
'Our compliance responsibilities are of paramount importance to us and we will continue to engage with Ofcom and our partners to ensure our content remains compliant.'

TV legend says it was ‘not fun' being on Coronation Street
Former Coronation Street star Suranne Jones has said her stint on the ITV soap was 'not fun'. The actress, 46, became a household name when she joined as factory girl Karen Phillips in 2000. She soon became Mrs McDonald, marrying Steve (Simon Gregson) just months after they got together following a bet with Janice Battersby (Vicky Entwistle) that she couldn't make it happen. The couple were pretty much doomed from the outset, and after staging a fake separation, Steve decided that they should part ways. However, shortly afterwards, he proposed again – but there was trouble brewing with Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford). She'd allowed the Croppers to believe that Roy (David Neilson) had fathered her daughter Amy, but as Steve and Karen said their vows for a second time, confessed that he was actually the baby daddy. A furious Karen grew increasingly jealous of Tracy's involvement in her husband's life, and after torching her new car, left Weatherfield forever on Boxing Day 2004. Two decades on, Suranne has reflected on her time in the serial drama, describing it as a 'different time'. 'I was in Corrie 26 years ago, which feels like a lifetime ago!' she said. 'It was huge. The paps were chasing us – it was just a different time. It was not fun, not when you're young. 'It was around the time of people needing to look a certain way, and all of that ring of shame, that's the era that we're talking about.' Continuing to Celebrity Angels, she said: 'I was in the press a lot back then, and I had people outside my house. I was being followed. 'I didn't go to university, so that was my university. I won quite a lot of awards then, because people loved Karen, because she was kind of feisty, people thought I was maybe like Karen. 'So I think the press loved the character and wanted something interesting for me.' Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The actress also spoke about how the show's popularity meant more episodes began to be produced. From January 2026, Coronation Street and sister soap Emmerdale will scale back to five episodes each. 'When I joined, we went from three to four or four to five episodes; it was a huge shift,' she explained. More Trending 'So we were just in more episodes and spent more time in people's living rooms. And like I said, Karen was really wild. So people just thought that I was.' Despite her feelings on stardom, Suranne is still in touch with a number of her co-stars. 'I was out partying, I was going to everything,' she said. View More » 'I was enjoying myself. I was dating, I was doing all of that with my Corrie group that I still get on with now – me, Sally [Lindsay], Jenny [James], Anthony Cotton and Angela Lonsdale, there were so many of us that were just kind of thrown into it all.' Emmerdale star reveals ‘long and painful road' amid health battle
Emmerdale's Adam Thomas has urged fans struggling with arthritis not to lose hope. Adam, who played Adam Barton in the ITV soap, revealed his diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis last August, but actually received the news in 2023, while he was taking part in Strictly Come Dancing. He has since been sharing updates with fans on social media after suffering months of pain, and even being left unable to walk at points. The star took to Instagram recently to share a message to his followers in a similar position to him. The picture sees Adam taking medication for the condition, which he says has 'changed' his life. 'I lost hope…I never thought I'd get my old life back… I was wrong! To anyone struggling with arthritis and is lost and can't seem to find hope… stay strong! It's along and painful road but I promise you…you will!', he wrote in the caption. 'These meds have changed my life … I'm pretty sure this post will get taken down again but before it does… I get so many questions asking what meds I'm on and I've been on several but the only one that has worked for me are biologic injections. I have an injection once every two weeks, no side effects no brain fog no throwing up, nothing! Nothing but pain free!!! 'I know this isn't going to heal the disease but it's given me a life I never thought I'd have again! Still putting in the work and focusing on diet and recovery as I'd like to think this disease can be cured naturally and one day I'd like to not have to take any meds but until then.' Adam added: 'I want to bring hope to those who are suffering and also awareness to this disease as I feel like it's not talked about enough! I see you, I feel you and I know how hard it can be, but don't lose hope don't lose yourself to this disease. More Trending 'Too much love.' Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? EastEnders star Charlie Brooks ‘very happy' flaunting a dress thats 22 years old
Charlie Brooks, 44, best known as Janine Butcher from EastEnders , recently delighted fans by slipping into a colourful minidress she purchased more than 22 years ago before her daughter was born. Sharing a photo on Instagram, she revealed that this childhood favourite brings back fond memories and still brings her joy. Despite posting a seemingly serious expression, she assured followers that she really is feeling happy. She captioned the post: 'Bought this dress over 22 years ago, before my kid was born, and I STILL love it. It actually makes me feel very happy. Funny how a piece of clothing can do that. My face doesn't look happy. But I am actually very happy.' Supporters flooded the comments with praise, admiring how slim she looks and the fact that the dress still fits and that she's supporting sustainable fashion. One fan wrote, 'I love your sense of style, you're so creative. Like you, I relate to the sentiment. But what I love most of all is that you've kept it, and it's not just another item of clothing that has been disposed of 🌏💚✨ xx', 'Beautiful dress. I would buy that now if it was available 😍' and her daughter Kiki even chimed in with a cheeky comment telling her mum to 'cheer up'. Charlie Brooks made her EastEnders debut in 1999 as Janine Butcher, the troubled and manipulative daughter of Frank Butcher. She quickly became one of the show's most notorious characters, known for her sharp tongue, scheming ways, and headline-making storylines. From pushing Barry Evans off a cliff in Scotland to framing others for crimes and blackmailing love interests, Janine was the character fans loved to hate. Brooks's performance won her widespread recognition, including a National Television Award for Best Serial Drama Performance in 2012. More Trending Despite several departures and returns over the years, Charlie always brought Janine back with fresh depth. Her most recent stint began in 2021 and concluded in late 2022, when Janine fled Walford after being exposed for a web of lies and manipulation, once again proving she's a master of high-stakes drama. While fans always hope for another comeback, Charlie seems content to take a break from the soap world for now and focus on life's simpler pleasures, while still turning heads on Instagram. Recently, Charlie opened up about embracing life in a phase without steady employment. After leaving EastEnders in December 2022, she's admitted to enjoying life's simple pleasures such as home time with her dog, long strolls, reading, and catching up with friends. Despite lacking work-related validation, she shared that these moments genuinely make her 'happy.' View More » Charlie is mum to 20-year-old Kiki, her daughter with ex-partner Tony Truman. Though they parted ways two years after Kiki's birth, they remain very friendly and largely a part of each other's lives as co-parents to Kiki. Kiki, now studying acting at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in New York, is seemingly following in her mother's footsteps.
